ABBA - Australian Chart History

All ABBA songs that reached the top 20 of the Australian Singles Chart. The backlash in Australia against ABBA was rapid - those scenes at the start of the video are from Melbourne in March 1977 and yet Knowing Me, Knowing You only got to #9 in the same month! I can remember sitting in Year 7 when that song came on the schools broadcast we were listening to and a cool girl went ugh. ABBA! Less than two years earlier, other cool kids were raving about Mamma Mia.
Ive often wondered if Molly Meldrum, who likes to take credit for their discovery was instrumental in their loss of popularity. he must have felt jilted when they visited in 1976 for a promotional tour but did not appear on Countdown. In later years, he simply would not put their latest clips on even though they were hits overseas, such as One of Us. If they didnt get on Countdown, it was unlikely to be a hit. When despite this, Frida had her number 5 hit in 1982 I Know Theres Something Going On, they put Frida and Phil Collins on the top 10 countdown, until presumably RCA kicked up a fuss - no one else had their producers name on a song!
Then all changed in 1992 with the release of Gold, suddenly they were back in vogue. Yet most people here do not know the sophistication of their last two albums, or that they actually did early 80s synth-pop very well indeed, with fashion to match! The first ever CD made commercially (in West Germany) was The Visitors, in 1982.

They stopped being popular in the early 80s as music tastes were changing with new wave and electronic music becoming popular among the young. I remember being laughed at the age of 14 in 1980 for liking them and they'd just had a #1 in my country with The Winner Takes It All. They became popular again after the release of Gold in 1992.

The fact that the two number one singles they released in the UK from The Album only top twenty in Australia
seriously! they made a movie in your country.

In Germany, ABBA were consistently popular, from the beginning until the very end. They always charted well there.
