Guy Offers Hand to a Giant Octopus You Won’t Believe How He Reacts Wild Hearts Aloha brother diver. I had a great relationship with a Octipus at one of my favorite free dive locations on the Big Island just off the Kona Harbor. It has lots of rock and creveses for eel and octipi to hang out. I found a trail of scalop shells leading to this one guys hidi hole and i had brought vienna fingers to feed the fish. they love them. he slowly brought out his long tenticle to check it out as I am holding it. He wrapped around it and pulled. I let him have it. Next i took off my glove so he would reach out for my finger. yes i understood he might think it was food. but he seemed to know right away it was not the same and he soon had my whole hand in two tenticles pulling and searching. I pulled back and he retreated.
For the next few months I came out to him with treats of different type but eventully an diffeent octi was there. not as friendly.
This area is heavily fished for the eels and octipi so he probably became someones dinner.
I have never been able to eat octipi and after that and other encounters I am so apposed to them being served. but that is not up to me.
Thank you for sharing this. I am a bit jealous.

Almost feels like every sucker has it's own brain. It's true, octopus' suckers are highly sensitive, they have nerves capable of some low level processing which communicates with a 'senior' nerve of sorts in the arm. Each of their arms is both capable of communicating with one another as well as acting pretty much independently from one another. They're truly amazing creatures

Octopi, have always been one of my top favorite species. I have recognized their amazing capabilities my whole life. Yet. I have never had the privilege to meet one, in person. Never, not even one in captivity, unfortunately. But, I do hope, someday. That an opportunity comes along. I would love to have an encounter communicating with one. :-)

They’re very curious so the divers have to be careful they don’t interfere with their breathing apparatus. A documentary My Teacher The Octopus’- I think it’s called, detailed a marine biologist’s relationship with one. It’s quite astonishing, their depth of understanding

It is almost like each tentacle has its own brain.
Well, that because they do. The neuro mapping of an octopus goes through their tentacles, which is why when an octopus loses an arm, the arm can actually camouflage and still collect data even castrated.

I love diving, but I dont ever want to see an octopus in their habitat, as a kid I had a terrible nightmare of an octopus draging me into the depthd of the sea, so scared of em, even though they are the smartest mist complex animal on the planet.

This reminds me of Helen Keller and folks like her: reading a face, especially mouth, jaw, (maybe throat) to understand how words are made, how they sound to a deaf person. Thanx for sharing your close encounter in the octopus’s garden

It is an assumption by some scientists to think that the universe doesn't have consciousness. Each and every particle, held together by God's agape love. Big bang/6nights and days. Glory.
Ps, it was a bunch of big little bangs.

Octopus: Wow, cool! That was awesome! Hey Bud, great to meet and hang out with you! Now, if you'll excuse me, I gotta go see a Man about a Horse. That crab I ate for lunch is kinda coming back to haunt me, if you catch my drift.

When and if man reaches the Moon of Europa, looking to decipher whether there is marine life there, he will come across beings just like the ones we already have here on Earth.

Very beautiful gentle, supremely intelligent, wonderfully created animal. I wish I could meet god and see gods mind and know everything, of all the beauty in the universe.

I wish I could get over my intense fear of water and learn how to swim so I can go see these beautiful life forms in their own habitat. Never gonna happen though.

Can anyone watch this video and still hunt them order them for lunch and eat them! Please wake up humanity we still got a little time left to make things right!

I like to imagine the octopus doing a midwestern goodbye, where he’s too polite to just leave without chatting for a bit before he makes an excuse to head out.

Dived with these back in the '70's at Tacoma narrows. Can be dangerous to divers getting a bit too friendly. Ie. masks, airhoses. Lovely creatures.

Once whilst diving I saw a man wearing a suit and carrying a briefcase. What are you doing down here. I asked.
I’m drowning. He replied

As a child, in South Africa, I got to know an octopus in a rock pool and it was just like this! CLEARLY intelligent, curious and playful.

1: 31 is very interesting as well as the follow up with the second tentacle because it implies octopus have a basic concept of consent.
reply

WOW! That must have been such an awesome experience, and learning experience as well-for BOTH of you! All I can add to this is: INCREDIBLE!

I be wanting to do stuff like this but with my luck I’ll meet the octopus from The Little Mermaid and would never be seen again

One of the most interesting and special animals on the planet, a complete mystery on the evolutionary journey. Hes so big

I just hope that this wonderful, beautiful and intelligent creature doesn't end up thinking humans are safe.
reply

Interactions with such an unknown animal to us. I'm otherwise respectful to the beauty of its life.
reply

Love that he became more gentle after you pulled back. We aren't the only empathetic species.
reply

Look gents, even an octopus knows when consent is involved and required. What a sweet animal.
reply

god damn music at the start i thought my keyboard was disconnecting and reconnecting lmao

The octopus eyes look like glowing alien eyes. So crazy how beautiful of an animal that it.

Octopus really are the most intelligent invertebrates on the planet, incredible animals.
reply

It was like meeting an alien. YEAH that's probably exactly what the octopus was thinking.

I would cry. So beautiful. What an amazing honor it would be to play with this octopus

I just realized how much octopuses remind me of the alien creatures in the aliens movies.

Special long arm that he uses for females hmmmm that seems awfully familiar
