My Freya was returned twice and red-carded when Diana and I drove three hours to adopt her. They told me she was returned both times for destructive behavior but when I adopted her I told her she would never go back to a shelter again. I made a commitment. It took her a but but Diana helped to show her the ropes and keep her company. She learned the play bow from Diana and how to play with toys. She was quiet for months but eventually she learned to bark from Diana. Now she has become her own dog which isn’t always a good thing but she is so affectionate I can’t stay angry at some of her antics. She has no idea how lucky she is or how close she came to walking that green mile. More adopters need instruction on patience and the 3-3-3 rule. Lucky for Freya I am dog savvy and I committed to giving her the best life.

If a dog has been returned THREE times, there is likely a good reason, and adoption by people with small CHILDREN is not to be recommended. I'm a cat rescue coordinator myself (but frequently deal with dog recues issues too, and believe me when I say this recommendation is coming from a good place. Obviously, the return reasons need to be considered (bite/aggression issues vs something like destroying property, but regardless, if an older animal has been brought back numerous times, it's a good possibility that the best placement would be in a permanent rescue/retirement rescue situation or with someone who has a lot of experience dealing with dog behavioral issues (particularly ones that are going to be ingrained as the dog is older. This is best practice for the dog as well as the family.

The crazy thing is people return dogs because they realize caring for them is like caring for another human being and to some a lot of work. The need to feed them give them clean water. Take them out to do their business and vet appointments. Also the most important thing which is give them lots of love and more. Some people just don't have what it takes and if they don't realize that BEFORE they get a pet they are fools. Sometimes it could be other reasons that come up but that list i made is the most likely the reason because I see nothing wrong with this dog. Just a big loving energetic buddy.

Remember the rule of 3s for adoption.
First three days: The dog may be overwhelmed and nervous, and may sleep a lot. They may also be easily startled or excited, and may not want to eat. During this time, it's important to give the dog space and time to adjust, and keep them in a quiet room with their bed, food, water, and toys.
After three weeks: The dog is starting to settle in and learn your routine. They may have figured out their environment and where their place is in the home.
After three months: The dog should feel at home and have built trust and a bond with you.

It makes me cry because I had a German shepherd I always loved his name was Snoopy and he was a huge baby German shepherd for a normal size and one day my dad thought because we couldn't afford him what if he gave him to the dog pound then let them give him his shots then take him back and sadly they said they don't have him. It makes me cry to know he was my big baby boy no dog was able to replace how big he was but how much of a good listener and training dog he was I wish I can hug him one more time to tell him I love him

Because he’s mix breed German Shepherd and they’re huge barkers. My neighbors don’t like us but we have 3, and a malamute, a husky border collie mix, a border collie, and a black mouth cur. Our neighbors don’t have any pets but we don’t care and we owned our home 1st so it’s a them issue not a we issue and even tho the neighbors have complained the police department refuses to do anything about the barking because we bought our house almost a decade before either of our neighbors did.

Our Husky/German Shepard was returned twice to the shelter before we took her home. She was a hot mess on the leash, but she's the most amazing dog and a beloved family member. We were so lucky to find sucn a great dog, I too can't imagine who would return such a wonderful dog. Shelter mutts for us all my life, never a breeder or pet store.

I've had dogs all my life (73 years. My last 3 dogs are, or were, shelter dogs. Each dog took a little bit of time (each at her own pace) to adapt to me, their new home, and the other dogs. Now they are friendly and loving dogs, and that includes 2 pitbulls. You raise them right and it's you who will reap the benefits.

How could such a sweet guy be returned to the shelter three times. I just don't understand, I have picked animals from the shelter and it hasn't been the best experience, but I never in my life would return an animal. It's forever. They had amazing lives and they were happy and that's all that mattered to me.

Please be very careful with tennis balls!
I know a man who had to reach down the throat of his Shepherd because a tennis ball got lodged in his dog's throat. Also, a dog at a local dog park died for the same reason.
Please use a larger ball with a large breed dog, not a tennis ball!

Many people don’t realize how much dogs need time to decompress and adjust after being adopted, it’s such a crucial step that can completely transform their true personality. I’m so happy he found a loving family who understands and gave him the chance he deserves!

Thank you for saving this dog. If I were an animal and I kept having to come back to a shelter where I was so sad I would probably feel like he did unwanted and unloved. But now he has people to play with and to be loved and that's what dogs are about
reply

I think people have to be honest regarding the type of dog that will fit their lifestyle. That's why there are so many GSDs, huskies and other working breeds at the shelter. Dumb and lazy people shouldn't adopt smart and active breeds.
reply

Wait! Are you saying you went to a shelter after seeing a dog online that had been returned three times to adopt THAT dog RU Kidding me Not too many people are left in the world that are that awesome anymore.
reply

Give animals time! They won't be perfect immediately. Animals take a lot of work, especially if they're traumatized.
If you don't have the patience or time, then maybe stick with pet rocks.

a lot of people don’t understand dogs needing to decompress after being adopted and how it can change their initial personality. so glad he found a family willing to give him a chance!
reply

This doesn't make any sense. I'm sure it took some time to adjust but he's such a sweet and darling boy. Glad he found the perfect family. Thank you for giving him a chance & a home.

I rescued my baby from an abuser. I can't even imagine our life without our baby Jax. We let him sniff, relax, chill and he came out of that shell. Now he's a loveable jokester.

In my house, we follow the 3-3-3 rule. Three days to decompress. Three weeks to get the idea of routines. Three months to feel like they belong, and the last can take much longer
