I believe the way all of this upside down stuff will begin again is the darkness that came out of will at the end of season 2 will find a place to grow and fester and eventually form another gateway to the upside down. But where? Think about it. The shadow monster likes it cold, and where is a place that is cold that we know will be heavily featured this season? That's right - the pool.
This also makes sense since episode 3 is titled The Case of the missing lifeguard this may mean that she was taken in the pool (similar to how barb died) by an upside down monster. Perhaps the one at the end of the trailer, but I'm not too sure, for reasons I will go over in a minute.
Another way I believe this darkness will spread and grow more powerful is by using hosts just like it did with will - this time, them being rats. We know this because episode 2 is called the mall rats, the season 3 poster features rats at the bottom coming from the direction of SOMETHING from the upside down and there is a brief shot of them running in the trailer.
Now I will go over why I believe the monster that took the lifeguard (presumably) can't be the one shown at the end of the trailer.
As many people do, I too believe that Billy will become the new monster this season after being exposed to something from the upside down - A bite, more specifically, as episode 7 is called the bite. But what did bite him? If he becomes that monster, it can't be the same monster, perhaps a demodog or maybe even one of the rats?
As for the lifeguard, if billy is bitten in episode 7 and then becomes the monster, it CAN'T be the one to take the lifeguard as she will probably go missing much earlier one in the season in episode 3, since it is titled the case of the missing lifeguard. So I really don't know what it the monster that took her and maybe even bit billy could be.

ok the theory of 11 still having to lay low i think is false because Dr. Owens says to lay low for about a year and Hopper says how about one night (for the snowball) and im watching this in 2019 after some trailers have been released and 11 actually becomes good friends with Max and Max shows her how to like live normally and shows her the mall so i think 11 will not lay low and live her life (you know like how stranger things characters live life not a good life but not in isolation)

Uh doesn't Max love Lucas? I hope there isn't gonna be a love triangle in between El Max and Mike, The whole reason stranger things has SO many fans is because most people keep on watching it because they want to see how mileven grows.

In my opinion in the 4th season if mike and eleven have like a Seance (if you know what I mean) I would be happy but Im scared for their relationship would probably be weird in real life

Season 3 is actually set in July, not even a year, since season 2 was on Halloween. So season 3 is set at least 8 months after season 2
