F. Y. I. Sirius was the secret keeper. He convinced The Potters to change to Pettigrew at the last minute as Sirius suspected Voldermort would go after him as he was James' best friend. Sirius thought that Voldermort wouldn't even think of questioning Pettigrew but he worked for Voldermort and gave him their location straight away. While I note that there sometimes isn't space to be as detailed as one would like, I wish to point out that Sirius escaped because he recognised Wormtail when a picture of the Weasleys, complete with Scabbers the rat on Ron's shoulder, appeared in the Daily Prophet which he'd borrowed from Minister Fudge while he was on a routine visit. Sirius then escaped as Padfoot because he was afraid that once Scabbers/Pettigrew heard that Voldemort's power was growing he would put Harry in grave danger.
