Top 30 Scariest Horror Movies of All Time

we’re counting down our picks for the most harrowing fright flicks, full stop. Our countdown includes movies The Silence of the Lambs, The Witch, The Babadook and more! Which horror film frightens you the most I can't imagine anything worse/greater than The Exorcist. I saw it in theaters when I was about 12 and it F'D me up. I took my then-fiance to see it when they re-released it around 2000. She was 30 at the time and had not seen it and frankly didn't know to much about it.
It hit her the same way it hit me after all those years. I told myself then that's why it will always be the scariest of all time.

Please also consider some commonly overlooked, underrated but equally awesome and scary horror movies.
I always see the same movies being mentioned but there are others that deserve to be on the list like the Saw franchise, the Wrong Turn franchise, Terrifier, Mirrors just to mention a few.
To be honest IT isn't incredibly scary compared to other horror movies. Its an incredible horror flick and one of my faves but hardly the scariest.
Also Silence of the Lambs is more of a thriller than horror.

I knew The Exorcist was gonna be #1. That movie was creepy. Poltergeist should’ve been ranked a little bit higher in my opinion. That’s one of my all time favorite horror movies along with The Shining. Sometime last year I checked out The Grudge. I didn’t find that movie scary. More like weird. As for The Ring that movie was boring as hell.

Thank you for the update, WatchMojo! One of the scariest horror movie I have ever watched was Michael Jackson's Thriller. The zombie close up scenes scared the heck out of me back in 1983. Also, one scene in Ghostbusters (1984. The ghost taxi driver near the end. Lastly, the scariest scene ever was Superman III (1983)'s Vera cyborg scene.

I think Repulsion and The Tenant by Polanski should be here, superior to Rosemary’s Baby and better than most of the movies on the list. The Hour of The Wolf by Bergman is underrated, his only true horror movie, very influential. Invasion of The Body Snatchers from 1956 is still scary. Really old stuff, but works.

I have watched more than 32 horror movies among which few are bad, few are just good and few are the best. Here, I saw few that are good to add on my list. Been searching for a good list ever since and found a few on this video. (especially good VFX and not too much plot armor) Thank You WatchMojo

I am personally tired of seeing Get Out on lists. I don’t know anyone who still talks about this film. Extremely overrated IMO and Jordan’s other 2 films are straight up trash. Get Out was decent but nothing special IMO. I swear the only time I see this film mentioned anymore is on watch mojo

The scarest movies are the ones based on real events. Im not afraid of your imagination, thats make believe - the real ones though.
The exorcist- the entity- the conjuring- Amityville - Ed Gein. Those are a bit different - Ed was a real live person-

This is more a popularity contest rather than what’s actually scary. Half the movies are mid at best in the scare department. The fact that things like Host and talk to me aren’t on here but bloody Texas chain massacre and the first Halloween are in madness

Kinda surprised Child's Play (the first one, Scream, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, and Friday the 13th didn't make the list. I remember the first time I saw The Exorcist though, I actually fell asleep. I liked the book though. Did a book report on it in school.

The Conjuring was not inspired by the investigation of the Amityville Horror. The Perron family was first and completely separate. The Warren's investigated the Amityville house years later. The Conjuring 2 refers to Amityville in the beginning.

The scariest horror movie that I've ever watched is The Haunting from 1963. It is absolutely terrifying with it's suspense and overall tension. The psychological terror that the main character goes through is nothing short of unnerving.

What no Friday the 13th that movie is classic. Well at least my other favorite horror movie Halloween was on the list. I especially love the 2018 remake where they make that none of the orher movies that came after the first one never existed

Maybe I’m alone on this one but I never found It 2017, paranormal activity or the Blair witch project to be scary. In all honesty I actually think Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch Project are both pretty crap films tbh

Honestly I really I don't think the Exorcist is a very scary movie personally. However I do think it's a very good movie! The performances from Linda Blair, Ellen Burstyn, Jason Miller and Max Von Sydow are amazing!
reply

I will admit Alien is scarier than The Predator, but there's just something about The Predator that scares me more: If a special forces group of trained military men can barely take it down, what chance do you have
reply

A lot of great, scary movies on the list. Imo, the most underrated horror movie is 1408. I was raised on horror movies, and have a high tolerance for scares. No other movie has ever scared me more as an adult!
reply

Many 80s horror movies are scary not in this list
The Evil Dead
Howling
American werewolf in london
Demons
Night of the demons
Friday the 13th
.
For me the best one is in 1920s Nosferatu
