Comedy writers doing drama (or dramedy, in many cases, as that's often a better fit, like Will Arnett doing the most depressing Dramedy of all time, BoJack Horseman (not counting the Chicken scene in M A S H, because it's hard to beat that. Even Bojack doesn't hit that level, but that's just one scene) is often the source of some great films. I love Eternal Sunshine and Stranger than Fiction. I cannot get into Punch Drunk Love, though. I haven't seen Uncut Gems, but the somewhat dramatic (but much lighter than Punch Drunk Love) role I found him perfect in was actually Spanglish. Of course, he's not the main character in that one, but Spanglish did something rare. It pushed against the zeitgeist a little in a way I really appreciated.
Spoiler alert I guess, but the zeitgeist at the time would say that because of the circumstances in their lives, the dad and the maid should have gotten together. She chooses to be better for her daughter, though. I'll check out Uncut gems, though.

Adrien Brody has said in interviews that due to him being cast as the lead in The Pianist he was more of a common choice for Holocaust films. Even though that is true as he has continued to dabble in that genre as well as other drama films I feel that a lot of the Wes Anderson films he has been in particularly The Grand Budapest Hotel allowed him to break out of that mould. Particularly TGBH because he typically plays highly complex characters while in this film his character is one of the most straight forward and comical villains ever put to screen which makes sense as the film is a comedy that references many caper films from yesteryear in its style. I feel like this really allowed him to do more straightforward comedic roles even if his later movies really aren't that but still it did show that he had the capability to do so.

You know speaking of Actors and type cadting, there's two certin beloved but CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED ACTORS who seriously deserve way more recognition, attention, fame, popularity, and love and their names are Bill Paxton and his son James Paxton and if you don't know who they are Goodle them! They're so talented but CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED and desperately need to be talked about more.

For Elijah Wood it wasn't SIn City that broke his typecasting. it was (Green Street) Hooligans, a movie he did before Sin City. same year, but yet. Also wrong about Craig. he was already known as a versatile actor before JB and basically went back to doing what he always been doing between and after. Ralph Fiennes. c'mon, he has always been a very versatile actor.

It's not just Leslie Neilsen, the entire supporting cast of Airplane were classic action types, and were hilarious playing roles 100% straight. You also had Robert Stack, Peter Graves, and Lloyd Bridges. Also, there is the Barbara Billingsley - most famous as June Cleaver in Leave it to Beaver - as the Jive speaking woman

The biggest type break for me is Jim Carrey, hated his movies until Beautiful Sundhine of the Eternal Mind. Very much a Wow, he can act! He's reslly good! The one that really hit me was Robin Williams as the psycho, that was so disturbing. Robert DeNiro in silly comedic roles is always a blast.

No James Gandolfini He was a college hippy that was known for plays and family centered acts. The ability of him turning into Tony Soprano is the same level of not better than Bryan Cranston. No disrespect to Bryan Cranston he should have been 2 and James Gandolfini should've been 1

Walter White is one of those characters that, no matter what Bryan Cranston does from now on, even if it's a movie like The Room, his career will always be a success. Such iconic roles don't come around often. Two other great examples are House and Buffy.

WatchMojo doesn't know that from the English point of view, southern means London, or the city. Southern English accents are more deliberate and northern English accents are more casual. Kinda the opposite of how that dichotomy works in the US.

Who made this list I'm going to disagree with Mathew McConaughey. Before 2013 he did A Time to Kill, Contact, U-571, Reign of Fire, Lincoln Lawyer, Killer Joe, The Paperboy, and Mud. Heck Adam Sandler did Reign Over Me back in the mid 2000

Not to call you out on Leonardo Dicaprio; never played as a villain before you claim.
Movie: Catch me if you can featuring Tom Hanks and Leonardo as a world wide thief forging thousands of dollars and constantly stealing valuable goods

Dude did someone from Adam Sandler's team pay WatchMojo to hype up uncut gems non-freaking stop The dude makes 20 horrible movies in a row and one decent one comes out and everyone loses their mind. It really wasn't that great imo

Cranston's an interesting one. First time I ever saw him was in a small, yet serious, role. Playing a Ranger in Babylon 5 who was being told that he was going on a suicide mission. This would have been in the mid-90s.

Matthew McConaughey really turned his career around, once he started making serious dramas, and less of romantic comedies. He really showed how much range he had, even winning an Oscar for his efforts.

I love actors ho play against type. those aee real actors. all these people who complain about their believfs and their personal phobias arent real actors. they should get out the business
reply

WatchMojo you have forgotten Harrison Ford’s role in Presumed Innocent. That was 9-10 years before What Lies Beneath & was completely different from the roles he was doing up til then.
reply

Jack Nicholson in As good as it gets. You usually see him playing characters you'd love to see get their comeuppance, but, in that one, you want to his character get the girl.
reply

I'm surprised Farrah Fawcett wasn't mentioned for her dramatic turn in The Burning Bed which shifted her entire career. She was no longer just one of Charlie's Angels

Tom Hanks definitely flipped the script. I knew him as the guy from splash and the money pit and then bamb Philadelphia and Forest Gump and he was the greatest actor ever
