My sister thinks the ugly Sonic trailer was a stunt. She says it would’ve cost way too much money and been way too time-consuming to reanimate an entire movie almost from scratch.
Ergo, it’s more likely that they made Sonic ugly in the trailer on purpose because they knew it would’ve gone viral and get more people talking about the movie, even as other trailers come out. Then release the better version to make everyone hyped for it.
All I gotta say is that, if that’s true, then they’re really committed to making it seem real.

I still remember going to see The Lion King live action film in theaters with my Mom and my brother, Ryan, when the actual trailer to Cats played and everyone made fun of it! Lol
Which was saying a lot because when I saw Detective Pikachu in theaters and saw some of the original ugly Sonic trailer playing nobody made fun of it. Lol
By the way, thank God, everyone came together over that ugly Sonic trailer.
I'm Sonic the Hedgehog's number one fan and I want proper Sonic movies so thank God I'm actually living in that timeline! EEP! :)

What I love about Sonic trailer is that instead of gaslighting and insulting the fans, the studio admitted they were wrong and completely redesigned Sonic. It went on to be financially and critically successful, which lead to 2 financially and critically successful films. This is what happens when you listen to the fans instead of insulting them.

With Sonic, it was established that if studios listened to what the fans want instead of pushing what they want on fans, PEOPLE WILL PAY.
I can justify that personally, Sonic 3 tied with Wicked as my favourite film of 2024 (yes I've seen the musical for Wicked and it's pretty accurate, I am not comparing it to the book I have not read.

Sorry but that Sonic trailer is the most brilliant marketing scam ever. Release a poor quality trainer. Get the entire world talking about it. Delay your release date, because you listened to the fans. Suddenly everyone thinks you're an awesome company. This was the plan all along. They just wanted to put on the pretense that they listened.

Ghostbusters 2016 trailer failed in the first 15 seconds. It started with a reference to the original film (30 years ago. 4 scientists from New York. It was a reboot, so why make reference to the original movie Then the fact that they said 4 scientists, when the original cast was 3 scientists and a guy they hired of the street.

Sometimes hating something is a good thing. It can act as good criticism towards needing to change something, and that person listens, we could get the best thing ever. Case and point, live action Sonic's first trailer in 2019.

A lot of these films were DOA, so that not even the most well put-together trailers could save them.
Good thing that, in Sonic's case, they realized the potential bomb in their hands and did some much needed course correcting.

I know Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) would be somewhere on this list. I remember everybody hated the trailer when it first came out because of how the turtles looked redesigned Bayverse style.

Dude, the Snow White trailer is so blaaaah. The dwarves look like something out of a horror.
But I am glad that the 2 and 3 Sonic movie the animators fixed it up.
