Don't scare the normies with durian stories! And thats not how you open them. They come together at the base in a dull point and have little segments at the bottom, that can easily be separated by hand when they're ripe. Stabbing or carving them can most likely result in injury.
Love these things, they just get more expensive each year and never get cheaper! BTW I find that in Asia much of the hatred toward durian is also closely related to racial and class prejudices of some groups against others. So be aware that complaining about the smell can potentially lead you down a road you might not want to be on.

Durian is like gold to people who know how to appreciate it. Good ones are super expensive too. The best way is to eat it as it comes naturally. For those who don-t like the smell and taste, there-re many other things you can enjoy without having to alter durian in it-s most sacred state. Love the host though.

I -will- return to durian one of these days. maybe with your recipe! But it hasn't clicked for me yet and I don't know if it's going to. To me, it tastes like vanilla custard, but smells like rotten eggs. And that smell wells up my throat like sewer gas for hours. I'll just have vanilla custard, you know?
