There s a reason why Parker House Rolls are America's most popular dinner roll. Not only are these great served with the main course, but shaped like we did here, they re also perfect for little sandwiches with leftovers. Alexander: Rolls like this are my Thanksgiving tradition I've been doing for years, but my form factor is a little bit different. I followed a recipe out of an old better homes and gardens cookbook and when I shape I do cloverleaf rolls, so I cut the batch into 54 tiny balls and then put them three at a time into 18 cups on muffin tins, I happen to have a 12 and a six that my mom has had for longer than I've been alive, let them proof brush them with butter and give them 15 to 18 in the oven. We currently have nine people at our Thanksgiving dinner so that's two each, and each one naturally subdivides with three perfect cut surfaces for buttering, they're awesome.

My favorite roll. Just FYI, be careful of killing the yeast with too hot milk or water. I learned that the hard way! I would warm the milk, put the butter in to melt along with the sugar and let it seriously cool to room temp first.

PSA: Remember to defrost your freezers! I just did mine and got maybe 30% more space in there, and likely saved a bunch in electricity costs. It's easy to do now that there's negative degrees outside again.

Invented at the Parker House Hotel in Boston in the 1870's. Ho Chi Minh probably ate a few as he worked there in the 1920's. Fannie Farmer had the recipe in an early cookbook. You re in good company Chef John

This recipe is remarkably close to a brioche dough which is of course from France. So this is probably an adaptation from french immigrants after they came to North America. They look really good though.

I'm very excited to try this! If you don't have a stand mixer, I've heard you can make dough in a food processor using the plastic fins instead of the blades. Would that work with this recipe?

That is the HARD way to make Parker House rolls.
My mom would roll out the whole batch and cut doughnut cutter sized rolls.
Pat of butter in the fold of each.
Delicious and beautiful.

I remember the Good Eats variation of the recipe where instead of melted butter, they added a small pat of butter in the middle
Would like to see how different that makes it

Well I was looking for a nice fresh bread option for Christmas dinner, but NO WAY I m waiting for a holiday to make these. Carb counting be damned there will be no leftover rolls.

Merci, merci, merci! Yummy! My mother made these every Thanksgiving & Christmas. that was about 75 yrs ago.
Merry Christmas to you and Michelle. Hugs from France

Yes! A good dinner roll is a wonderful, wonderful thing. (I also love Lion House Rolls, so now I want to bake both and have a classic dinner roll bake off)

2: 26 Thank you for not using plastic wrap. I was actually holding my breath waiting to see how you'd cover the bowl. A plate works just fine indeed. :)

fun fact: both Malcolm X and Ho Chi Minh spent some time as workers in Parker House Hotel kitchen (where the namesake rolls were developed)

What a great recipe. I can remember eating these as a child in some hotel restaurant. To me, they look like they have a smile on their face.
