Pyshechnaya - This is one of the most legendary places to eat donuts in all of Russia. And theyve preserved their style, recipe, and even price from the Soviet Union period. At first I thought just a couple of these Soviet donuts would be fine, but Sergey reassured me we needed a plate of them. He was right, they are easily the worlds most addictive donuts. And they only cost 0. 23 per donut. Must visit when youre in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Caf Singer - House of the Books - Next since we were in the area, we went to Caf Singer, a legendary cafe and restaurant. We mainly went to see the heritage and view. Food and coffee were alright, not the best. Kvartirka - Soviet Restaurant - This was probably the best meal of the day. Kvartirka is again a Soviet / Russian restaurant set up like a house, and serving a mix of dishes popular during the Soviet Union period. I tried the borscht and the Chicken Kiev both of which were quite delicious and homely. An amazing meal and nice environment. Stolovaya 1 - Soviet Canteen - Finally to finish this Soviet Union food tour of Saint Petersburg, Russia, we ate at one of the cheapest meal options in the city - a Soviet style canteen. You walk through the line, choose the dishes you want, and pay for what you eat. It was a good experience, and delicious food. Total price - 229 RUB (3. 59) Again, a huge thank you to Sergey from Real Russia for taking me on this food tour

While it's nice-- and good that you're doing a Soviet-style/USSR food tour, you have to know-- and should have known this before beginning: There were massive food shortages during Soviet rule. At times, one could only purchase 2. 2 pounds of meat and two-thirds of a pound of butter a month per resident per month. Vegetable counters displayed carrots, beetroot and cabbage, but much of it was rotten. And you'd be lucky to find butter. Crop failure and poor agricultural management caused wheat and bread to be rationed- causing trouble w/ meat and dairy- as their feed was effected. And this was just back in the early 1980's. The nostalgia for Soviet era food would be like us here in the U. S. craving Depression-era foods. And yes, some do. But it doesn't represent anything but the hardest of times and the most stalwart of people- the survivors anyway.

So many Soviet and Russian people have suffered because of this melted butter inside of the Chicken Kiev It has been a festive dish for so many years, and when people bit it, their best clothes often got covered with this butter. This happened to my mom at the party dedicated to her graduation from school. She was wearing a beautiful blue dress, that was a real treasure in the Soviet Union, because it was unreal to buy one, every girl had to sew her own dress herself, but when her best friend bit her Chicken Kiev, the same kind of explosion happened, and the butter flew exactly onto my mom's dress. It is interesting, that nowadays in many remote Russian towns this dish has turned into the most popular fast-food. Here, in my hometown Volgograd, it has the same level of popularity among local people, like burgers have in the USA

I know exactly the taste. In Eastern Europe that dough is what we call doughnuts. We had a small shop next to our school and every day my sister and I we would bought and eat doughnuts. The line was long and not all the kids got the chance to buy since the break was over, I remember I have literally seen some kids crying because they didnt had the doughnuts that day: )

To get the full Soviet experience, you'd have to wait 30 minutes to an hour to get a table even though they weren't busy. Then, you would have to wait 30 minutes to an hour to order from 2 or 3 items. Then, you'd have to wait 60 to 90 minutes for them to tell you they had sold out of what you ordered. That's what I remember. Things are unbelievably better now.

Mark, I am surprised that you apparently know little about Chicken Kiev. an American Version uses various spices, dill, chives, parsley. but Chicken Kiev, is fore mentioned spices, and butter wrapped, breaded and deep fried. The only cheese is found at Sizzler in America, on the Malibu Chicken, (not deep fried, but baked with ham and swiss cheese)

Mark what you didn't know is that they infuse those donuts with Krokodil. They're not addictive you're just hooked. But I believe if you can do without chillies for a couple of weeks you should be able to kick this
