Get my food and travel updates (free): Read the full post here: Theres a restaurant or food to eat just about everywhere you go in Thailand that people say you havent arrived to that place until youve eaten there. In Lampang, the small and beautiful town in northern Thailand, that place is known as Kuay Teow Boo Yong. They specialize in nothing more than beef meatballs (lookshin neua ) and noodles, but they are known throughout Thailand for serving some of the best quality beef ball in the country, and literally every Thai who visit Lampang must eat at Kuay Teow Boo Yong. On top of that, its also a very popular restaurant with locals from Lampang, and when I was there I noticed everyone from police to monks to office employees slurping down bowls. Im not even a huge meatball lover, but I decided I had to try them since I was in Lampang. The restaurant is located not far from the center of Lampang, but its kind of hidden within a neighborhood, so its kind of hard to find if you dont know exactly where it is (so be sure to check it out on the map. But from the central old part of Lampang, it should be just a 5 - 10 minute walk to get there. We arrived quite early after they opened, before the main lunch rush, and already they were busy with plenty of customers devouring big bowls of noodles. If you eat at Kuay Teow Boo Yong, you dont really have much choice but to eat the Thai beef meatballs (lookshin neua, and then you can choose your type of noodle. I ordered kuay teow lookshin neua ) with sen lek, the medium sized rice noodles and I also ordered pisayt, for a slightly larger portion size. It only took a couple minutes for the noodles to arrive, and it came piping hot to our table, and looked very simple, just the noodles on the bottom, with a handful of fresh hot beef meatballs on top. The noodles were garnished with just a handful of green onions and cilantro and little else. The best thing about eating noodles in Thailand is that you can garnish the soup to make it exactly how you want it to taste. I like to add in a bunch of dry chili flakes, and a couple scoops of chili vinegar and make sure my noodles are spicy and sour. The noodles were and the soup were pretty standard, just about the same as anything youd find on the streets in Thailand, but the beef meatballs, which they claim are made with 100% beef, were actually pretty good - they had a nice firm texture, a little spongy, but not rubbery like some can be. So how was Kuay Teow Boo Yong? Overall, I have to admit that the beef meatballs were pretty good. But were they the best thing to eat in Lampang, and if you dont eat them is it like you havent gone to Lampang? I dont think so. I probably prefer the delicious northern Thai food from Mae Hae, or the khao soi from Khao Soi Islam better. But that being said, the lookshin neua, Thai beef meatballs, were some of the best Ive had in Thailand for a long time - not that I eat them very often. If you have some extra time when youre in or traveling through Lampang, its a legendary restaurant to try. I feel like wanting a big Pho bowl with that much pepper that you had in this bowl too. Looks good but by your facial expression it is not as appetizing as many other dishes that you've eaten. Pho or this noodle bowl?

when eating meatballs I also love to add some soy sauce, it tastes wonderful. like a sweet, salty, sour, and spicy in one bowl. I indeed love spicy-sweet food though maybe you wanna try it that way

Excellent video Mark. I like meatballs made with a bit of bread crumbs mixed in. In Belgium this week. heading out to find some early dinner, probably not meatball noodle soup. :)

Do you ever encounter food that is too spicy for your taste? I always see you adding chili sauce. how hot is the sauce. on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 being the hottest?

Excellent presentation as always Mark. Something tells me you didn't like this though-- the guys strutting around didn't exactly make it Thai. not very hospitable.

A nice plain snack Mark, I myself is not a big fan of beef meatballs but will certainly try as long as they are 100% beef rather than combined with flour or rusk.
