Bushmeat is a term that is used to often describe wild game meat in Africa. And while there some types of bushmeat that are not good or unsafe to eat - grasscutter - also known as a greater cane rat, is safe and one of the most popular types of bushmeat to eat in West Africa. Its a delicacy So while we were driving on our way to Elmina, Ghana, along the side of the highway, we stopped at some hunters, and bought a grasscutter. Later in the day, we met up with our host family, and we drove over to the Elmina fishing market. The market was amazing, bright and colorful, and energetic, with some unique fish and seafood available from the Atlantic. We bought some fish to go along with our grasscutter, and then we continued back to the house to start cooking. First for lunch, Mama made us a dish called Eto, a mash up of yam and palm nut oil, topped with eggs. It was a little on the dry side for me, but it was an honor to have a chance to try that special Ghanaian dish. For dinner we prepared the fish and grasscutter. The fish was made into Ghanaian groundnut or peanut soup, which is one of the best dishes I at in Ghana. The grasscutter was made into a bushmeat grasscutter light soup which included chilies, garlic, onions, ginger, and tomato. Finally, for the main start of the meal Mama made omo tuo, Ghana style rice balls. How does grasscutter taste? The greater cane rats run around the fields and eat grass, so unsurprisingly some parts kind of taste like grass. But they are a white meat, and have a similar look to chicken, but the meat is even sweeter. It was also surprisingly fall apart tender. I thought it was amazing Across West African food, grasscutter is a very popular meat, and a delicacy eaten on special occasions

I dont understand why there is always trash on the ground in most of the videos that show Africa. They can make their own trash cans and burn the trash. The men could paint the houses and pick up debris around the town. There is no excuse for the houses to look like that when they are driving decent looking cars. I never see any of the men doing any outside work in these videos but always the women. Why is that?

Cane rat is also delicious in Zambia & Malawi, but they don't have such interesting sauces as they do in Ghana. Those Ghana sauces look really delicious. For Westerners, Cane Rat is best described as tasting like rabbit/chicken/guinea fowl. Make sure though that it's a proper cane rat (tasty) and not just a large normal rat (average tasting and can carry disease.

I have not been to Ghana. I have been to Africa twice. I have met Ghanians on both occasions and they just seem to me to be the most friendly and likeable people of Africa. I just feel happy when I am near to them and talk to them. Amazing people. They also love potatoes Every time we went to eat they wanted to know if there were potatoes.

No way, how peoples eat that rat. no other things for eat. if there old grand father, s and if 1000 years ago they will eat, thats not mean they will eat now plz stop eat lover, not mean every food lover crass the limets, if they will eat hummen then every one try to eat that. oh God

Horrible part of history, where African's sold their own people to other countries. But at the time, they didn't consider them their own people. they were people of another tribe. So these Africans were just a commodity who would make money for their African captors.

I respect people's culture. You are very open minded and positive. Also you are brave to eat a rat. I would have sat and only ate fish. I love how the family lives and work together. That is so important in this lonely planet.

Love your videos. Question though, does the tour company get you a home cooked meal in many destinations? Planning some out of way travel next year and would like to actually experience some home meals & just not restaurants

Mi say Lawd I dont know about the grass cutter. Maybe I wouldn't eat it. Everyone is different. GOD MADE US SIMILAR YET DIFFERENT. MY REVEREND USED TO SAY HE ATE BUSH MEAT. GOD IS A GOD OF VARIETY.
