Making Sauce from 600lbs of Tomatoes with Frank and the Pinello Family

Every August, Frank Pinello and his family gather in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, to can the best summer tomatoes so that they have perfect tomato sauce all winter long. We tagged along and documented this long standing family tradition. Chris: Question please. When I watch Italians canning tomatoes or tomato products they don't worry about it being sufficiently acid. Everybody else says you must put in lemon juice or citric acid to guard against botulism. I lived in Italy for 7 years and I know it's a very special place where things work differently there from anywhere else. But does that apply to Italians in New York?

My parents came to Staten island NY from Mexico and the first job my mom had was cleaning houses, mostly rich Italian families and they all lived on the same block, or around the corner, my mom use to take me and I remember the families they were all kind and loving and always treated me and my mom with love and respect, I had authentic Italian food made by the grandmother's, they always made sure I ate, I will always cherish those moments

check it out. I'm full blood italian, however born in Australia. My parents were born in italy. like a lot of italians in australia, other than speaking italian and cooking i have never really seen any in australia that preserve or constantly do italian things. I can without a doubt say that the italians in american specifically New York, are more freaking italian than the ones in Italy and I love it!

I'm a first generation Sicilian in Toronto Ontario and you guys remind me of my family when I was a kid. Problem for me is we stopped doing the tomatoes when Nonno died. This video makes me want to start up again. You meal reminds me of home when I was a kid. Thank you for taking me back and bringing a tear to my eye. ---sam

I kinda feel like this is a dying thing in north america. We seem to be going more and more towards -out at 18(or whatever, and you're on your own. See you on the holidays. - Whereas in the past families stuck together for financial and just plain -the family helps each other- reasons.

I'm a Southwest Brooklyn (Park Slope, Sunset Park, Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst) boy my whole life. I'd love to see other parts of the world, but I realize by this age that this part of the map is a huge part of my identity for life. And Frank is one of us. Tres cool

better n faster way is to grind the raw tomatoes n then heat them n then filter it n bottle it or roast the raw tomatoes over fry/barbecue kind of n once little cool down take the outer skin out and grind them n heat to remove water n bottle them.

It is so beautiful to see a fruit that was first cultivated by the Incas thousands of years being embraced by the Italians as part of their heritage. This demonstrates we are all connected. Many times food is that link. GOD BLESS YOUR FAMILY.
