In this episode of Local Obsessions, Hashim Aslami, a successful saffron producer and Afghanistan-s top advisor in the saffron sector, talks about the world-s most expensive spice, known as -red gold. - Hashin explains how saffron has impacted Afghanistan-s economy. Saffron, prized for its bright color and savory flavor, is produced entirely by hand and extremely labor intensive and is often used in dishes such as bouillabaisse, paella, tahchin, and risotto milanese among many others. I see 1 mistake in the comments about pay. I also think the pay is low but you guys are mixing two things. They pay 1 dollar for 1 kilo of FLOWERS PROCESSED and the ladies can produce 3-4 kilos OF SAFFRON. Also, I suppose they are talking about FRESH saffron which is heavier than dry. ---One freshly picked flower yields an average 30 mg (0. 0011 oz) of fresh saffron or 7 mg (0. 00025 oz) dried; roughly 150 flowers yield 1 g (0. 035 oz) of dry saffron threads; to produce 12 g (0. 42 oz) of dried saffron, 1 kg (2. 2 lb) of flowers are needed; 1 lb (0. 45 kg) yields 0. 2 oz (5. 7 g) of dried saffron. ----To glean 1 lb (450 g) of dry saffron requires the harvest of 50, 000-75, 000 flowers; a kilogram requires 110, 000-170, 000 flowers.

I pulled a 10-month tour in Afghanistan. One of the most hospitable people I've met, and I've been around a bit. It amazed me how things just grew after rainfall. I always thought that agriculture could be an amazing export for this country. Now I'm here learning that saffron is from here as well. I was in Kandahar rather than Herat though.

The Afghan Company probably doesn't make that much money. It's the US and European companies that make the money. Just like in Coffee. Most people are not aware how many times a bag of coffee beans passes hands starting from the farmer until it's handed to you as a macchiato by the barrista at your favorite coffee shop.

To all the Americans going -Look here y'all only 4 dollars a day? ---A: Your own minimum wages are laughably low compared to many other countries. -B: The cost of living in Afghanistan is not the same as the cost of living in the US. -C: No Afghanistan is not the capital of Norway. --You're welcome, have a nice day.

-Ben. Wow! Are we the only ones that know the difference between an compound adjective and a compound sentence, what a split doublet vs. a split infinitive, a pronoun or a split infinitive versus a split doublet? --Just Google: --Saffron substitutes

I feel like Saffron is literally the only way for Afghanistan to really have a good economy. Aside from Opium Poppy growing this is probably the next best resource they have there.

I don't get it it doesn't even taste that good as far as spices go. It's different and has nice colour and that's why it's so valued but it's taste is so so.
