Tim Gula is one of the closest disciples of Frank Reilly alive today. I met up with Tim to watch him do some quicksketch using the Reilly Method. Enjoy Cliff: Tim Gula has done more than anyone else to improve my drawing than anyone else. He used to come over to my house when I lived in Los Angeles and say get your stuff, we're going to the zoo today to draw animals, or call me and say he was substitute teaching at an art school and go to room whatever and we'll be doing life drawing all afternoon in Pasadena.
In this video, Tim never mentions working with the two greatest comic artists -- Jack Kirby and Moebius. He also worked with Neal Adams (Neal told me himself, not Tim. He also worked on Batman The Animated Series and designed backgrounds for the Asgard in the Thor movie. Not only one of the last great anatomy and life drawing teachers, he's also one of the funniest people I've ever met.

Dude, this is amazing! This is very similar to my -instinct- when doing figures, like it makes sense to me to think of it the way he is showing here. don't get me wrong, I am nowhere near as good as he is, but the way he draws the rhythms is exactly how I think when I'm drawing figures. I am definitely going to explore his techniques more. This was extremely eye-opening. I do wish he would have talked a bit more about how he approach to the faces, but I really appreciate you sharing this. and fear not, Stan, I already own 3 of your courses! ;D But it's nice seeing how various people work and then trying to take what I like from it all

It is good to hear the purpose behind this type of drawing. In art school, gesture wasn't clear to me. I tried to cram a lot of information rather than get a flow. This and Proko's use of CSI lines helped simplify and streamline my gestures. In other words it took a while to learn that I shouldn't focus on defining volume or structure, and moreso describe the action.

The music is has a Christmas mystery vibe. Like the night when Macaulay culkin wishes that his family would vanish and the alarm turns off because the electric cables are ruined or the night when the dead dad comes back as a snowman.

This guy is talking my language. thanks for the encouragement. I will keep practicing. When its broken down into simple geometric shaping its is so much easier and attainable.

I don't know if I get it, or like this. It's like his drawing has too many concave lines on concave. At least in the limbs
