Time to flex those leg muscles! Let-s draw one of the assignment examples from the calf anatomy lesson. I explain each part of the process, from establishing a dynamic gesture, to constructing the anatomical forms, to refining and shading the drawing. Confused? Want more examples? Lucky for you there-s 3 more narrated examples like this in the premium course! Get all the assignments and more content at

Stan I love to hear you talk and draw. you offer so much for us poor wannabe's. Although you may find doing this counter productive, I believe the contrary. Listening to your process helps me to see that the process is more mental sweat than magic. Where else can you get this kind of thorough training on the net. Nowhere. Happy to see you making a name for yourself, and your contribution to assist others in the same educational endeavor. Aaron Blaise stated at Lightbox. -Yes I have been riding his coattails for awhile-. You are a leader to the animation community. Saw your Saturday panel at Lightbox. I will say you offer more to the online draftsmen out there than anybody on the panel. FYI. Shorten your weekly webcast. Time is too important to working students and everybody makes them too long anyway.

I do think these shading walkthroughs are extremely helpful - they help cement everything together. Sure perhaps some of us may jump into these before we are ready, but I don't think that's a reason not to have them for all sections of the anatomy. Others will benefit greatly from them. I have bought the premium course, which is excellent I might add, and the only comment I would have in learning from one part of the body to the next, is that want more examples like this that show different sections of the body working together - shading demos that show a side plane of the torso, or the underside of a stretched arm moving around to the shoulder for example. Perhaps as a business proposition, shading in greater detail could be a new separate advanced course.

Greetings Stan. Watched the calf construction/shading. I am wondering where the constructive principles are. The drawing looks great and to me is reminicent of illustration more than it does real life drawing. When I watch your narrative seems to be strong with constructive principles of drawing but the drawing itself appears absent of the principles. Thus this is puzzeling to me. Did you ever use constructive principles of drawing or is this something that simply developed as a narrative in explaining your approach. Also I have not received notices of the pod casts. I did originally but now it seems as if they have stopped.

Thank you very much for this demo, Stan.
Some questions that i have and i hope you can take the time to answer:
what's the mindset that you have when you make some lines bolder and others thinner? I'm having a rough time knowing when I should do one or the other?
also, what helped you to make better line quality? (what exercises)
I'm struggling in those subjects right now
Thank you in advance, congrats for the podcast I don't miss any of them when I walk to home after college.

One of the things I love most about watching Stan draw is that he's always moving his hands over the contours. Even when he's not making marks on the paper you won't see his hand go straight from one side to another. It curves over what should be the contour of that area. It's almost like he's moving his hands over an unseen 3D object. Really useful to watch for those details to understand how he's thinking about the lines before adding the structure to it

As drawing I realized that drawing the base which is body is possible for me but putting on the clothes is. Just say like climbing the averest without any equipment.
I wish there will be tutorial on that topic.

I know this is about the leg and not the foot (so you get a pass for that! -- psh, right, but. I think you lost the dimensionality of the heel there.
