When learning how to grow potatoes, you'll hear about seed potatoes and you might wonder what they are. Unlike many other plants, we grow our potatoes from. other potatoes! However, there's a process that our seed potatoes need to undergo to make sure they have the best chance of survival. This is what we're talking about in today's video. I bought some seed potatoes from Urban Farmer Seeds (Russet, All Red, and All Blue varieties) and am going to talk you through chitting, cutting, and drying your seed potatoes, as well as the basic anatomy and structure of a potato. Hopefully after this video you have a full understanding of how to prepare your potatoes for planting!

Thank you.
The practical way of explaining is always the best.
I am just starting out, a bit late in the season but it will be a learning experience.
Our warm season in Sweden is just starting.
I learned a lot with this video!
I did not think not having sprouts would equal to potential rot.
Question:
Which way, without that heat lamp, how would you best make them sprout?
Putting in a sunny window or warm room?
Would you say doing this strategy is essential?
Thanks!

Thank you soo much for this informative video. I have been wanting to experiment with growing potatoes and actually have a few perfect potatoes that have several eyes that I was going to cut and then immediately plant and now I know that would have been a mistake. Appreciate learning how and why that you present in your videos. Love to learn about growing broccoli, green peppers and squash in containers.

I am in Portland metro area, I just started growing potatoes. I yielded a far smaller crop than anticipated. How many seed potatoes should I be putting in a 20 gallon grow bag? And, can I grow potatoes through the winter? I read about an Irish way of digging deeper into the ground to plant the potatoes because it is used as insulation, what are your thoughts?
And thank you for this video.

Loved the video. I am new to this and was totally confused after 3 hours on Pinterest. Thank you for being so informative. Now, I know what to do with the 3 lbs. of seed potatoes I just bought. How long should I let them dry out? Is it a matter of a few days? Looking forward to following you and seeing what to do next!

Very interesting to see. I got some seed potatoes back in march and and ended up just putting them in the ground whole and the amount of potatoes we harvested was very sad. Im curios if putting them in whole was the absolute wrong move. Do you need to cut them up?

I got seed potatoes from my local nursery and they all look the same; and, none of them had any sprouting on them. How do I get them to sprout? I saw you planted some without any sprouts but I want to have sprouts when I plant them. Any help Id appreciated! Thx

I would like to use this method combined with grafting tomatoes onto roots. I'm assuming once the potato emerges from the hill, you would then follow a grafting video. Thanks for the informative content.

Thanks so much. I am learning by making mistakes. How long do they need to dry? I'm not sure what they should look like when they are ready to plant. Thank you again for your very informative videos.

Any idea if I can speed this scabbing over process up a little by giving my seed potatoes a couple hours at the spa (in a dehydrator? Sounds to me like it might work

Another great video, thank you! Do you know if I could immediately re-plant my early potatoes for a second harvest? Or do they need to go Dormant first?

On other types of slips (cacti) dusting the cut surface with charcoal dust or even wood ash helps them dry and prevent rot, would this help potatoes?
