Vermicomposting, or composting with worms, is one of the best ways to integrate food scraps into your garden. Worms make short work of most food scraps and create wonderful BLACK GOLD, or worm castings. Castings are one of the best soil amendments you can ask for, and better yet. worms are easy to care for! In today's video we take a look at a DIRT SIMPLE (pun intended) system from my friends at Uncle Jim's Worm Farm. They sent out a kit, as well as some red wigglers and european worms to start off the bin with

Nice system. But think outside that 'box' and EXPAND. The best place I'VE found for my worms with ALMOST zero work is in raised beds under my meat rabbit cages. I used to sell the rabbit manure for 5 bucks per full feed sack. Now I get 10-15 bucks a pound for the worm castings. Worms are second only to chickens for GREAT 'homestead livestock'. In the right environment, worm populations will EXPLODE. Talkin' about the circle of life here. Their castings provide a decent bi-monthly income at the farmer's market. I feed 'em to my chickens and 'aquaculture' fish as well. The chicken manure and 'fish water' feeds my gardens. which feeds me, the worms, and the public, (+my wallet. The only outside input is HALF cost for rabbit, fish, and chicken feed. Win, win, win. IMHO, anybody that doesn't incorporate worms into their food 'system' is paying too much to put food on their table.

Is their gonna be a An Update video, on how your new pets are doing?
Does the bin, come with bottom holes. for Leachate collection?
Leachate is NOT Worm tea.
Worm tea is made from Worm poop, non chlorinated tap water, unsulfer molasses and bubbler system.
Leachate is the dark liquid that leaks out of the bottom of your worm composting bin. Leachate is water released from the cells of decomposing food scraps. This fluid is produced from watering and fluid from the kitchen scraps, and drips down into catch bin. Many leachate fluids can be toxic to vegetable roots. but roses and house plants love it.

This is a good set up if you want to waste energy on the light for the worms but I would recommend 2 5 gallon buckets. If you still small holes in the bottom and the lid of one and keep the other as you got it with no holes you then have a bucket that can hold the worms with no light needed. If you do want to use this rubber bin I recommend getting one that has a seal to keep water in. That would easily work for the worms in this video

short answers: worms can't drown
long answer: worms can breath oxygen throw air or water. they just prefer to go out of the dirt when the environment is wet, since the moisture on top of the soil protects them from the sun. this gives them an advantage to feed on decaying leaves on top of the ground (fresh food they can't usually get with the sun hanging around)

I guess you know that red wrigglers are European too. Glaciation 10, 000 years ago wiped out many North American worms. All Eisenia fetida and Lumbricus terrestris now here were (accidentally) reintroduced from Europe. There are some native worms that survived the various ice ages but none of them are suitable for vermicomposting.

Hey awesome video! Thank you for all the info you're putting out there. I was wondering, since worms can carry the pathogens of salmonella, should eggshells be boiled before adding them to the vermicompost? Does that mean they can be affected by the disease and transfer it to humans? Sorry i know it's a lot of questions lol

uncle jim forms comes mixed with Red wigglers and blue worms aka indian worms. The blue worms are notorious to escape they love heat and die below 50. If they do dont feel guilty.
Uncle jim doesn't grow 90%of the worms he contacts other warm farms to do for him. he is cheap I give you that.

Good what you are going but see how much of pollution you do when doing such by throwing out polythene. do it in a simple organic way. otherwise it looks like you pollute world just to create so called organic
And this not simple, you are just doing the mixing what you purchase.

Can you coconut husk bedding thats for reptiles and their plants for bedding? Its non-abrasive, biodegradable, non-toxic, and 100% toxic. Im just wondering because I have used this in the past for reptiles and one block is 1/10 the price of coco coir strictly for composting.

I had to come back to this video after watching maybe 11 other worm bin videos. Sort of as a clearing my head from 11 different worm bin ways and 11 different instructionals. Aaaaaaaah. I watched Uncle Jim's video too.

I use to be creeped out by worms but seeing this video taught me how helpful they can be when it comes to waste. Itd be awesome if neighborhoods had large vermicomposts. Never heard of this till today, thanks!

If your just starting out and you want to put your food scraps through the blender be aware it will also put an excessive amount if moisture in your bin. I highly suggest you let it drain off first.
