Interested in growing microgreens, but not sure what you need to get started? In this guide, I'll talk about growing trays, seeds, soil, and a basic overview of how microgreens grow. We'll cover some of the problems you'll run into as well. I used to grow and sell microgreens commercially to high-end restaurants in my city, so these tips should help you out whether you're growing for home or wanting to make a little business out of it!

I just bought my supplies to start growing microgreens. I got coco coir and perlite at home depot, and I also have that cheap top soil stuff which has sticks and what not. If I screened the top soil, would that be good to mix in with my coco coir and perlite? Also, what ratio should I use? I'm new to all of this and haven't really seen much online regarding ratios. Thanks!

Nice comment on the soil. I have the same type of 1 inch grow trays and though, why am I putting in so much soil if these can grow on toilet tissue? Testing coco coir mats right now. But there must be something even cheaper, some waste material say like coffee grinds or wood dust. If they don't need nutrition, there has to be a free substrate out there?

I have red spring wheat grass in a (1 inch tray 1020). There arent any holes in the bottom of this tray the grass stopped at about 2 inches. I have one T5 light 12 inches above it. Grass looks like it isnt flourishing. Where did I mess up? Also had a fan circulation. I have been watering from a spray bottle and also added water on top in the corners

Nice concise video. Those flats are great! I've also found a good alternative to soil is hemp fibre mats from terrafibre. Perhaps slightly more expensive but completely eliminates soil mess and water retention is fantastic. Also another great organic bulk seed supplier is mumms in BC, free shipping on orders over $25 in Canada and $50 USA.

I use the aluminum roasting pans you buy at the grocery store. I poke holes in the top one and put gravel in the bottom one so that the water is not standing on the roots, but is still available for the plants. They are going to be a lot deeper than you may want, but they are durable and they are not plastic.

I really would like to know why those 1020 trays aren't available anywhere in Europe.
Are they produced in USA or imported from chinese factories? At this point the only way to get them is some sort of group buy but I need to know where they come from, can someone tell me something about it?

Great video! I am starting a micro greens business. I have a question about the germination of the seeds. Some videos show putting another tray on the seeds with a paver. Why do you just cover with an empty tray?
Thank you for all your help,
Darlene

What's an easy seed to find? Like I can't order special seeds online because they won't deliver to my country. What's something I can find readily in a grocery store (for example, chia, flax, sunflower seeds. Thanks for the lovely video: )

Your video is super with vital basic information. Kudos. I always look at these videos and wondered why a shallow tray was not used to make harvesting easier. You gave the answer. Easier to harvest and most economical. Carry on bro.

I've been sprouting broccoli, radish and legumes for years. But your videos are getting me really interested in starting a serious setup at home. Thanks for the videos! Also love that Oblivion sentence reset! ;D

Wow, thank you for all this info! I feel like I can do this now. One question: what do you set the tray on? I know you said a flat surface, but how do you avoid getting drainage water or soil on your surface?

I used to grow all kinds of greens in simple trays from a restaurant supply store. It eliminated this problem before I ever knew it was one. But it doesnt work so well for bottom watering. Soooo, theres that.

really good and smart stage presence. stop, pick your nose, pause to allow it to be cut, then start over.
on the other hand, opsie. forgot to cut that out. get a TUMBS UP for the good stage presence.

Wow I love the advice on cutting and not washing. That makes perfect sense and I have not heard that from any other of the top micro green video producers. This was a great video

Kevin, can we just buy a huge bag of 'birdseed' sunflower seed from the hardware store? If it's not salted, would you likely get similar outcomes for microgreen sunflower shoots?
