That
I just wanted to say that you don't need to grow pickle cucumbers only for pickling. We're in rural Croatia and just like people do in the villages here we grow a lot of our own food. The climate gives us long summers but they are brutal to our plants so we have a few varieties that can survive the heat and sun during the hottest period. Cucumbers are usually one French cornichon for pickling and one local kind that contaivs more water but is short and works both for pickling and eating fresh. Now, I prefer the French ones. They should be picked and pickled when they are very small, but we leave them to grow 3-4 times the length of pickled cornichons. They are much sweater and absolutely less sensitive to becoming bitter from the heat. In other words, I would recommend sowing several kinds of cucumbers and not limiting what it can be used for. Pick some early if you want tiny pickles, but otherwise just use them as fresh cucumbers.
This year our cucumbers do unusually well. They're in the field and we have no irrigation system, but we need to water manually every evening. This means we need to add a lot of water to prevent the soil from drying up during the day, so there is no gentle, even flow and sooner or later the cucumber do die of mildew. This year we let them grow vertically and it seems it's good for them. There is mildew, but not much and it arrived very late. Our neighbour's vertical cucumber is doing well too, but our other neighbour let his grow horizontally and his cucumbers are all dead by now. I would say the vertical solution is better, even if you have the space to let them stay on the ground.

The first thing I ever grew was actually a apple tree. It was absolutely accidental. As a kid I threw a core in my backyard and just thought it would break down so didnt think much of it until a small sapling started to grow in the place I threw the core. I asked my foster mom about it and she told me it was an apple tree growing. So she allowed me to grow it out. I loved watching the tree grow. Sadly we moved years ago and obviously I didnt take the tree with me. I always wonder if its still Alive and producing apples, i know when I lived there it had started to produce some apples. They were small but delicious. The first thing I actually tried to grow was a giant pumpkin. A little ambitious I know but I just really wanted to grow a pumpkin for Halloween. It was such a fun process and I did successfully get a small large pumpkin. I say small large bc it was 25 lbs which is a good size for a pumpkin just not what it was supposed to be. It was supposed to get up to 150lbs but thats probably something I did to mess it up. It was still really cool to grow. I also absolutely love growing cucumbers for making pickles!

I am having a problem with anything of a squash nature, zucchini, squash, pumpkin, cucumber even watermelon I can't get a veg. or fruit to mature. They develop to about an inch and fall off. I have been successful in other places with squash but where I'm growing now they fail. I have tried many things and I am wondering if it is a lack of pollination issue. I have tried to hand pollinate too no avail. Just can't figure it out. Cruciferous do well, potatoes, carrots, stuff that doesn't have a flower to pollinate are doing well except onions and garlic that is a whole other frustration. Growing in Florida using store bought dirt and my compost and this year adding a little fertilizer.

The diluted milk works a treat on powdery mildew. First time I had it was this year. Removed the few worst leaves, sprayed the rest. Took two applications about five days apart. The PM was not on the cucumbers though, but on the pumpkin and cantaloupe. The cucumbers were basically finished by that time.
I grow mine hydroponically, and they tasted perfect (kratky method. They also grew HUGE. I actually had way too many cucumbers, and the chickens got a fair bit esp during the hot days (good water content.
Anyway, they are super easy to grow. Trellis is the main thing, I happened to have very wide mesh, and used that.

Hi Kevin. Thanks for this timely video. I am going to grow cucumbers this year. As a matter of fact I have sowed 2 types which broke ground 2 days ago and are currently under grow lights. I plan to transplant them in smart pots when theyre ready. My concern is trellising. I like the kind you are using in this video. How tall are they and where can I find something similar? I love using smart pots due to their portability.

I'll try again. My cucumbers suddenly died last year. Four days ago, my new crop was extremely healthy looking. Three days ago, one side completely died. Today, my ONE INCH cucumber (only one fruit) is all I have. I'll clear out my container and start over. Thanks for the tips but I feel like a complete cucumber failure. Y'all please pray for me to get some cucumbers to grow.

Great information! However. question that I hope you can answer. Started a little leaf cucumber 7/17/21. Grew like crazy! But all I am getting is male flowers. No fruit as of today 9/1. It's supposed to be a heat tolerant variety and parthenogenetic so I am clueless. A couple people said it may be the heat that we have been having here? Any thoughts? Thanks

I have a question for you. This is the first time growing anything. I have a good sized cucumber plant growing. It has plenty of male flowers but no female flowers has this ever happened to you? Is there a way to fix this? I guess it was more than one question. And FYI I live in the northeast part of the country. If that matters. Thanks

We had frost here well into May so I started my cukes indoors then moved them outdoors later. The plants are nice and big now with huge leaves and lots of flowers but the local bee population hasn't been around that I've seen. I've considered hand pollinating but can't seem to find any female flowers. Is it too early? Thoughts?

I have 19 cucumber seedlings about 4 high. I am wondering if I should trellis them. They will be container grown. We want enough to eat daily and to pickle. Don't know if we should start more. This video was an awesome start. Good to know that cukes will be right at home in my tropical climate

Such a helpful video! Quick q - what is a burn pit? I was planning to throw my trimmings into my bokashi bucket, but maybe I shouldnt do that if there was some powdery mildew on them. Is it generally okay to throw yard trimming into a bokashi bucket? Thank you!

My first experience growing cucumbers was having unknowingly purchased lemon cucumber plants. As they grew, I thought there was something wrong with my soil and that they were bad as my cucumbers were a pale yellow and round! A learning experience

So, there is no pruning to do to a cucumber as you would a tomato plant? Cukes are definitely wild growers and get a bit crazy. I just wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything, like pruning. As you can tell, I am new to this. TY!
