For little ones - I use two tin cans together. The one on the bottom is for the water. The one on the top is for the plant and medium and I hammer nail holes through it for cotton wicks, water level indicator stalk and watering. Glue a tube for watering through, above one of the holes, glue the tube for the water level indicator above another. Then I crochet a pot shaped cover to hide them both inside. It's great for baby plants. The larger tins (usually with mushrooms or potatoes in) are probably better than the baked bean tins.
I am yet to find out whether they will, in time, start to rust but I like the straight up and down of them. Get more on a shelf! And you can make them different heights if you're good with hacksaw and tinsnips (and if you're careful with your fingers.
So if you're a bit 'crafty' - don't be getting rid of those empty tins!

I like the plain terra cotta pots from Home Depot for consistency, however, I am a sucker for your palms pot! I have a couple of large ones in that shape and I also love the olive jar shapes. Large pots! With iron stands. I like the way terra cotta and clay ages, even if painted. I also keep all of my plants on stands, because the large black beetles climb terra cotta to lay eggs and their children are grubs. Grubs chew right through roots. It's a hobby for me to find the pots and stands I like. And by the way, I am in Arizona, so terra cotta works.

SO happy I just found you. You are the best! Question: what tip of pot did you put under the last pot with the plant in it from Walmart? The pot was the raised one from the consignment store? Also, SO glad you informed about some plants (like ferns) that are okay without a drainage hole. I did just order the diamond tipped bits to drill some holes in pots that do need them, thanks to you. Really love how you break everything down in simple ways and make gardening seem approachable and not daunting. Thank you!

I also love the fact you're using multiple plants in pots. I love to propagate my plant and sometimes I have too many water cuttings that would take up an enormous amount of room if I gave them all separate pots. So I have some gorgeous Arrangements of all these different cuttings from Wandering Jew deposit those 2 philodendron spider plants Etc all growing in the same pot looks like a little garden!

Totally love the idea of going and shopping for pots at different stores, it's fun to watch. Question about that Majesty Palm you got - was it pest free? I really want one and went to Home Depot and it was covered in spider mites. Made me walk away from their entire selection unfortunately. I would like to pick one up from a big box store, I'm just wondering if that's to be expected.

epic gardening Where's the best place to get the very extra large terra cotta pots and for the best price. I remember when you used to be able to get a 5 or 10 gallon terra cotta pot from Wal Mart for just a few dollars and now they cost a fortune compared to then. The extra large ones I need will wipe me out on my budget. Lol!

I had to come back and mention that Walmart has actually started to put out pots where I live, and they're not terribly priced and look really good! Guess they figure most people are not searching for plants in the winter, except those of us who love our indoor plants year round: D

I love watching your videos, Kevin!
Could you please make a video about gardening while disabled? You mentioned your mother has a disability, and so do I. I would love to learn any tips you have.
Thanks for all of your content! Listening to your voice is very relaxing.

You can check small-local dollar stores, mine usually have pots year round but, 9 times out of 10, theyre plastic which I personally dont mind. I found some 9 pots for $1. 39 each with 3 drainage holes. Theyre also usually gray, terra-cotta color or greenish blue

My go to for houseplant pots is to hit up a local thrift store and buy up whatever brass decorative pots they have around. Brass is pretty soft and its easy to drill drainage holes in it. I also find it looks really nice with the green of the houseplants.

This makes me miss living in Canada where Dollarama is just unbeatable for super cheap surprisingly great stuff like this---dont get it confused with US dollar shops, it's a world different. And I agree, when did Target and HD get so expensive?

Are the blue java ferns the same kind of java fern that's used in aquariums?
I knew you could grow those outside of water in high humidity but I didn't realize I could literally just pot one up as a house plant.

The best pot deals I consistently get are at K-mart and Rite Aid (both only care them seasonally)
Occasionally I'll get an amazing deal at a close-out store like Tuesday Mornings, Ollies, Big Lots

I have bought the pots with the plastic plants before, but I keep a lot of reptiles so I repurpose them for decore in their cages. I would probably pass too if I was going to just throw them away.
