I just moved to New England from Texas, and when I saw everybody on my street putting their leaves out by the curb instead of using them as mulch in their gardens I immediately went NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! especially when my neighbor decided to be nice and scooped up all the leaves I was saving for mine! Leaf litter makes AMAZING mulch, and people just. sweep it up and throw it away. The same with grass trimmings. We don't throw away our grass trimmings. Some we leave on the yard as nutrients for the grass, the rest we use as mulch. And our lawn is beautiful and green and lush and thick because of it whereas all the neighbors who sweep all that grass litter up and throw it out have tons of bald, bare, hard earth spots where nothing will grow. And we use zero fertilizers on our lawn! Using your yard and lawn trimmings to feed back into your garden is my favorite way to grow things and the #1 mistake of throwing it out is the thing I see most often.
Love your vids! Been a gardener for years, but just moved to this new climate where new fruits and veggies and lettuces are suddenly available and learning new gardening tips here! :)

Great points: However this advice is dated. In the roaring 20's gardening was just a pastime, now it is a necessity, a can of bush beans has doubled in price since 2021. Here is my point: even a robust potato hoe is unavailable here in Eastern Ontario. What Epic shud go into pronto is a survival garden without treks to ur over-priced nursery. I mulch and compost everything in an acceptable dimension and PH level, and most leaves, clippings, coffee grounds, bread crusts, etc. are decomposed along with dead birch tree tops which provide earth giving super compost quikly. Another tidbit is to save seed from say beans or peas and even potatoes (that will seed. The price of seed (in Canada) has gone from 2 to 3 buks per packet - comprendes/rozumyes: save seed, compost incessantly, to make ur garden have a + ROI. I cud go on n on, but hopefully U get my drift, the previous garden methods of watering daily from a municipal water duct, buying kelp, peat, phosphorous, potash, etc. are fast evaporating (big bux) so get prepared for SURVIVAL crops n techniques in 2023.

If you have chickens and a garden, decide which one you want to fence. I personally love watching my chickens roam free around the yard, but it has severely limited my gardening space. I used to have so much parsley that I would dehydrate bunches of it. My chickens love parsley. They also dug up my rock melon vines, tomatoes, mint, capsicum, eggplant, and lettuce. They were very creative digging around the chicken wire. That said being able to use chook poo on the plants and trees I still have is great too. The chickens love digging around the base of the fruit trees. :)

So glad I've watched a couple of your beginner videos. Yesterday I just started my first container vegetable garden of my own (I've volunteered with a community garden for years but that meant I always had a ton of guidance for everything I did. I read some stuff that made mulching seem pretty optional according to personal preference so opted not to but now I've reconsidered. I have a lot of vermiculite laying around; does anyone know if that would make adequate mulch?

Great tip about checking with others! In Florida, the Univ of FL extension office has month by month info on what to plant when by region. A great way to check your growing season in warmer climates is your local extension office. Some will offer classes while others will offer online advice from horticulturists and master gardeners.

I am having a horrible time with clay soil. I have been trying all summer to improve it. The other day I went out to check on the patch and what I had put down had already gone to Clay. There is absolutely no drainage there. What in the world can I do?

With the world going in its current direction, growing fruits and veg should be considered prime knowledge.
I'm starting small with a single tomato plant. want to gain some confidence and go slow, but I'm enjoying everything so far!

My best producing garden was a 4ft x 4ft square foot salad garden. 2 types of lettuce, 3 types of tomatoes, cucumber, small carrots. I'm doing another one this year because the last two bigger beds sucked

This is entirely not a beginner video. The advice might be solid but ypu are using WAYYYY too much gardening jargon for a beginner to effrctively take away value from the video.
