A few years ago I tried this crop for the first time. It was going well until the bugs came along. I'm still a newbie gardener and what I thought was simple stink bugs on my plants turned out to be a horrible infestation of vine garden pests! By the time I figured out what they were, I had already lost 4 or the 6 watermelons growing as well as the whole cantaloupe patch. Those bugs ate through everything. This year, I'm using a mixture of castille soap and neem oil and have killed 2 of them so far. Once I started the neem oil mixture, I haven't seen anymore!
Thank you for these tips! Next year I hope to have at least a 1/4 acre garden with lots of edible goodies and will be using your videos as I go! Have a wonderful growing season!

Good morning Kevin. New follower and loving the info, so thanks. Third year growing watermelons and still have questions. My melons (2) are pollinated and growing great. Im pruining back the multitude of vines to concentrate the power but Im worried about not leaving enough vibrant leaves to keep the energy flowing. The oldest leaves have lost their life and if I cut all the new growth, will I be hurting the plants ability to provide energy for the melon? Whats the sweet spot here?

You definitely know more about gardening than i do. but i think you cut it a bit too early. As long as the stem is green it is still feeding. It is still gathering sugar at that last stage. It is fully ripe when the tendril and stem starts to dry out. They do pick them commercially while they're still green when they're being shipped, but in the home garden you can wait a few more days and it will be even sweeter.

I add granulated Sugar In The soil when My water melon plants are Starting to put on Could add the complete summer long, Tablespoon Every couple of weeks The fruit grow huge Tasty, have some Black Diamond growing, Like Black Diamond 40-50 pound melon, like mounds 14- 16 tall add sand, Usually wash in Lime, plant food through the year, little chicken manure, un-mounded usually won't produce huge melons

Im actually growing sugar baby watermelons right now. I have two that are the size of golf balls and today I noticed two other female flowers the size of a marble and just manually pollinated two other female flowers. Im so excited. My first time ever growing any fruit Im so excited for my watermelon! Cant wait until I can harvest and it eat. Thanks for the video.

Im getting plenty of flowering and Im growing small fruit. The small fruit is dying and Im not exactly sure what Im doing wrong. Its my first year for this garden and Im a total rookie. Ive tried to grow the vines up a trellis and its getting massive. Still no fruit. Any tips? Ive taken pictures from step one to right now. Please help! Thank you all!

That looks so so good! I am growing watermelons this year and they are going crazy. I only planted 5 total plants I bought from a nursery. They must love the soil and the sunlight because theyre doing awesome. Thanks for the tips on how to know when its ripe and how to care for it. Appreciate you!

I'm growing a ton of mellons this year! Hanging em all on some pvc trellising, hopefully it's gonna be tight. I'm doing those little mango melon/ vine peach deals, Cantaloupe, and the big boy crimson sweets. It's like a 10' tall trellis, hopefully it's tall enough!

The one you called Eric, looked like what in my country is called an Alcayota, I think if in the same family of watermelons because the plant looks the same but inside, the fruit is completely different, I really dislike its taste but many love it and make jam

Im new growing watermelons if I have one plant with multiple vines I should cut all the vices off saving only 2 fruits? Do I need to keep the fruits as close to the plant as possible?

So youre aware, some pollinators like honey bees will only go to one flower, so they come for the sun flower, and they wont touch any plant but the sun flower.

You said the curley tendril should be totally brown and dried up for the melon to be ripe, but it wasn't, it was still green yet your melon was ripe and sweet?

Love your tips. I have 3 watermelon plants, only one has a fruit, might the other 2 be males? If yes, how would I choose females in the future?
