As you're thumbing through your seed catalogs for the upcoming season, you might be confused by common terms for seeds. Are GMO seeds bad? What even ARE heirloom seeds. And what about hybrids. they're not good to grow. or are they? In today's video I explain the common misconceptions about all of these seed types to help you make sense of your seed shopping this year

Very concise explanation. Question. If you have the real estate, time, and
patience, could one grow to a F1 plant to mimic the F1 you originally bought?
Save seed from the most desirable plant. Sow 8 next year. Again save seed
from the best plant. Maybe 2 grow right, and so on, until all seeds saved
grow similarly or true to what you want? Or at least close to the originals?
Seems Heirloom seeds are taking a back seat to F1's year after year in regards
to availability. So for beginners, all the more important to learn proper seed
saving technique's. Paste Tomato's at Johnny's, 16 varieties, 11 F1's.
Boils down to growing for fun, or sustenance, and deep are your pockets.

Very informative. In the hybrid point. I live at the coast and a lot of the vegetables I grow, come from inland. Some cant take a lot of water, so I buy the hybrid seeds that are modified, to be more water tolerant. I used to plant potatoes from potato sprouts from my store bought potatoes, and they would just rot in the ground coz they were always wet/damp. Coz the potato season is generally when we have rainy season at the coast. Now I have potatoes that doesnt mind all the water and yields beautiful potatoes. BUT after the first season, I got what you explained about the plant reverting back to its original version. BUT I better understand the reason now. Thanks

He DID comment on the propaganda surrounding GMO foods (big bad GMO) and repeated that activist lie about animal genes in GMO seeds. Only the GMO tomato tried that and it is obsolete now. GMOs must not be confused with lab experiments to make glowing plants in laboratories - they are just experiments not meant to distribute for farming. All these myths are fear mongering lies to sell more crappy organic produce, especially the non-GMO certified label. Watch for the new labeling laws taking effect in 2020. They can be used now but they are not enforced until 2022.

When you mentioned the corn, it made complete sense why they are the way they are. When I first saw the corn in Canada, I was like what is this? what am I supposed to do with this? I thought maybe they are picked young. They have no taste. The corn I grew up eating as a child are completely different. They are much larger and the corn seeds are larger and look more mature and taste really good. I only see them here once a year at festivals at a very high price too just for one corn. I know the difference because my mom used to grow corn back home.

I think the easiest way to explain what hybrid and heirlooms are is basically like what a cross between two pure bred dogs would looks like and then having that mut cross with an other one. If you cross say, a golden retriever with a poodle, you'll get a Golden doodle (hybrid. Keep crossing a golden with a poodle, you'll always get a golden doodle. Now, if you cross two golden doodles together, who knows what you will get! But, cross two poodles together, you'll get poodles! (heirlooms.

Well. roundup-ready crops are all GMO and afaik you can buy them in the states. It is what you eat over there I think if you buy corn at the grocery store.
Btw. the anti-GMO sentiment you mentioned. well yeah not much to comment on. It is uninformed BS. People mess with species genetics ever since the dawn of agriculture. we just have better tools now that is all nothing else changed. And that is the end of that conversation.

Question for you if I can (or anyone. When starting seeds indoors with a heat mat under them, its recommended to immediately stop using the heat mat when they start growing. What about if you have different seeds growing over a single mat and some start in 5-7 days and some start 7-14 days? If the 5-7 start breaking surface at 6 days and the other longer seeds havent started yet? thanks in advance.

Thank you for the video. I am a home gardener who lives in Malaysia (S. E. A. I started with hybrid seeds and recently heirloom. Had to get some from the US via mail. I love hybrid for their disease resistance and heirloom because they are unique (cant buy those veggies from the market here. I hardly see any organic seeds around here though. And thnx for explaining what GMO seeds are

Tricknology. All he's telling you that these are altered seeds. He's also NOT telling you the process In which these undergo. He's also NOT telling you where these GMO seeds are being sold.
You all had better do your own research. This guy is speaking with a fork tongue. Satan cast evil suggestions in firm resolutions.

don't know if they have this everywhere, but you can also contact your county extension office for information about things to grow in your area. I know they are incredibly helpful in my area of Georgia, and nobody ever thinks to take advantage of the services they can provide like soil tests.

So im a Little confused. Everybody keeps telling me there is no non GMO corn out there, every edible corn is gmo.
And I bought some seeds the other day too, but you say that the seeds we buy are always non gmo?
Whats with corn anyways does anybody have some good info on that?

I feel so conflicted about hybrid seeds. I want to be able to save seeds, but hybrids are often more vigorous and resistant to disease ugh!
Even with heirloom varieties, you could have cross pollination during your growing season, so my end up being a hybrid if you save seeds

I have to ask did you actually water your cabbages from that high up, and is it okay to water your cabbages by watering them like that? the only reason I ask is because I remember in a previous video you said to water closer to the root so that way no rot takes place.

Did you know the geneticly altered bananas. to make them bigger. It doesn't always keep the flavor, or the size. This is all I know about GMO. Main reason for GMO is to grow something fast, quick to supposedly accommodate people. Then the GMO for stopping bugs, etc.

Check out SELECT SEEDS for some older plants (flowers) Nasturtiums from circa 1806 for 'Indian Cress' Nasturtiums are edible when you do not spray. Could not find video where you mentioned buying Rose's. So using a different video. Good luck.
