Debarking Logs with Bark Spade and Drawknife 2. 0 - One Man Traditional Log Cabin series Kevin: Hello Erik! I have been watching your videos. all of them. and have started a log lean-to project. I just purchased a Muller drawknife similar in design to yours. It seems a bit dull with some burs on the blade. OR, I just may be using it wrong. I am using balsam fir, because it is the main tree on that part of my property. The red spruce or just waaay too big. When peeling bark, do you use it bevel up or down? Also, what grit stone do you sharpen it with? I was thinking of getting a Whetstone 1000/6000 grit. Thanks for any input! I am inspired and truly learning a lot from your videos.

I am again still fascinated with what you have decided to do. May I ask:
1. Why you have decided to do the log cabin?
2. Did your parents approve since you did not go directly to college?
3. Do you have any previous experience building log cabins
4. Is your log cabin on private property?
5. Do you work on it during the cold months?
Thank you so much for responding to this interrogation, but I am so impressed and interested.
Greetings from White Plains, NY which is 24 miles north of New York City.

Somehow I began watching your video when you were splitting logs longitudinally. I didn't realize there was a series. I'm now starting at the beginning. I am so impressed with your skills and would like to know how you learned how to build a log cabin. Please let me know. Thank you.

So o don't know if you will see this but I wanted to binge these videos but it plays backwards since the oldest is at the bottom not top so you have to manually scroll and click as it is if you flip it that would be dope thanks sorry if it's an inconvenience I still love the videos

Thank you so much for answering my 5 questions. I have just finished your 7 videos and am very unhappy to not have more to watch. Again, I have 2 questions. Will there be more videos? Also as of today, is the log cabin still under construction. Thanks again for your reply.

I have watched all of your cabin video, live the content! My husband and I are curious what species of tree(s) you are using. We are in South Texas (USA) and on have Oak and Mesquite wood which is very dense. The wood you are working with cuts like butter!

Nice work. Your logs look a lot like the white spruce I have here in Alaska. The limb knots are a pain in the butt! It does have good golden color though. Will you be scribe fitting the entire length of the logs or just notching ends?

It is my personal opinion that wearing work gloves is a good idea when using a draw knife. I know from experience that it is easy to slip and cut yourself. Wearing gloves adds a layer of protection when a mistake is made.

You are going to get tough hands working a barking spade. Great job! I. Never got the hang of it myself, always have preferred the skarvkniv. This is the best time for barking. Good luck with your project!

whats the reason why you cant make a log cabin with bark on the logs? is it to keep insects & stuff out of the home that live in the tree bark? or so you can treat the wood to waterproof it?
reply

Nice work. Looks like you are getting your rhythm. The woods you are working in is beautiful. Wishing you much luck on your journey. And am looking forward to your progress.

do you need a really sharp axe for cutting trees down? my dad always uses a more blunt axe for cutting firewood. cos he's not cutting it he's splitting it.

I had to start at the beginning to truly binge watch your stuff! Very inspiring and thought provoking! I'm liking it, I'll stick around!

reply

There a quite a few people that would want to help you with this so you could end up creating an entire village!

Can you tell me what is the name of that tool that allows you to scribe the cut out for the upper log? Thank you.
reply

What did you do when you weren't filming? Listen to music, an audiobook, or just the sound of the work you are doing?
reply

How did you know what you needed to do? From the internet? I never knew that you needed to peel the trees.
reply

if that wasnt one of the trees you wanted to use. would that be barking up the wrong tree? .; )
