How To Build Stone Foundation for Log Cabin by Hand 5. 0 One Man Traditional Log Cabin full series Jay: I am posting here and in a few other videos, you have produced as a response to students that had questions. I commend you for your effort in documenting this project but must be correct in some of the descriptions and examples of work as being one thing when it is another.
This. is not. a stone foundation by any traditional example at all.
This is a wood post-in-ground system, (such as poteaux-en-terre) yet not even a traditional context of that since you have used modern concrete around all the wood and stone, which is structurally unsound over time. nor even in good practice as you have backfilled with concrete even around the wood. which is known to accelerate decay in wood contact. especially in the ground contact situations like this.
This is stated as a correction, not a criticism per se, for those that may believe this is a good foundation system to follow or best practice. It certainly is not traditional nor fits into the low impact criteria of the natural building venue of architecture.

another question: you use concrete for the holes but what would they have used traditionally hundreds of years ago before concrete was invented? smaller holes and hammer the trunks in? i feel like your holes are very big. uses up a lot of concrete. ive got almost no experience with construction etc but when we used to put fence posts in for example all the concreted posts rotted quick and the ground seems to move the concrete out almost like its rejecting a foreign body, the concrete posts started to lean and come out of the soil. the ones we hammered in with no concrete lasted longer and stayed firm & upright

That tractor reminds me of my dad's Ford Workmaster. I wanna say it's from 1960. I doubt this tractor is the same though but very similar build. My dad still has and uses it to this day I remember doing so much work with it in highschool around 2010. We were still using it even 50 years later. amazing. I'd love to do something like this, go out and build a cabin. I think my grandpa would be envious because he always lived the life of 18th century pioneer but idk if he ever built a cabin for himself.

I am in awe of this video. You need to be congratulated, praised or cheered on that foundation. I'm just kind of at a loss for words. You have a dedicated fan in me and I won't miss any of your future videos. The memories that you are making now with this journey will become priceless in later years. What a blessing it is for you to be able to document it all on video. Great job on your filming and editing. Wishing you much success!

I am impressed beyond words. what you are doing is so rare, and the dedication you've shown to this project is beyond my ability to put into words. Forgive me for asking you this because I'm sure someone already has, but how did you learn to do this? I didn't think this type of knowledge was still around! I'm hooked on your adventure and can only thank you for letting me live vicariously through you.

I admire your work ethic and your talent. This will be a fantastically beautiful cabin for many decades to come. I've seen most of the videos already - just came back to see this one that I missed. This Colorado woman is jealous of your lush Swedish landscape! If you were my son I'd be incredibly proud! Please keep us updated on the finishing and what you do with it and your life in it!

the frost line there should be about 1. 5 meters deep. Your hole is too shallow. Also, when the ground freezes, it will expand and grab the concrete from the sides and push up. The sides of a concrete pier need to be smooth. The phenomenon is called adfreezing. I fear your cabin will be lifted right out of the ground.

do you measure your foundation so its all horizontal or so its the same height above the ground? id assume you need everything horizontal and varied heights based on ground contour so the cabin is flat. also why did you specifically choose to start making it over 2 big boulders? does it make the foundation stronger?

Hey Erick,
I gotta say you done some purdy amazing work with just a few hand tools and a lot of elbow grease. Work that most grown men shy away from and my hats off to you young man. P. S. I was wondering did you ever get to harvest a couple of those big wild boars that I seen in one of your videos?

reply

I wouldnt have used the poles or cement for the corner blocks. Modern cement (portland) traps moisture and is brittle, anything inside including wood and metal (rebar) will rot / rust, expand and crack the cement. A lime (real lime mortar) mortared stone pillar IMO would have been a better option

Very nice, but you didn't get a permit, so you're going to have to demolish it. By the way, that'll be $500.
