I Use Birch Bark For Roofing My Log Cabin Forest of Sweden
video description
This because the bark contains the equivalent of blood vessels of thee tree.
All the water and the nutrients from the roots travel up to the branches via the tree bark. And the glucose produced by the leaves travels down to the roots via the tree bark.
By Cutting the bark in a full circular manner around the trunk you stop life circulating in the tree.

Once again I'm amazed at your tenacity Erik. You had mentioned earlier that your grandfather is your mentor, did he teach you your woodcraft? I imagine there must be a lot of the old time, traditional log cabins in your area of Sweden; are there many you still live in such a cabin, or have people started to live in modern frame houses. By the way, got my campers mug, love it! Chin up dude!

We've really enjoyed watching what you've done in the old traditional ways. It's been an experience and we're looking forward to seeing the finished product with doors, windows and whatever kind of heating source you've come up with. We also really like how you've incorporated nature and animals into your videos. It's nice watching how you enjoy ALL that you are doing.

This guy is a inspiration to the younger generation. I remember growing up in my teens on my grandfathers ranch. I had to get up before school to muck and feed all the live stock namely goats. This gentleman is from a different era with his attention to detail, and his work ethics. Erik you are one fine gentleman to say the very least, you are humble and creative.

How to kill a tree! you killed a lot of for your roof. It's called girdling, i'm not sure, i'm not english. But when you cut bark all around the tree, you cut sap moving to the top, and the tree die. You did it on so much birch tree. You can use birch bark safely, but dont cut all around, let a way for sap

this is a big and hard work, to build all this, but you dont show that you can drive there by car, start the material, use a gas generator and other electric tools, there is nothing wrong with that, because of this I feel that I am being deceived and I dont want to continue further

The cabin looks amazing. I like the extended front. I love all that solid exposed wood. My family built a cabin in B. C, and I have always admired the roof and the finger prints and foot prints of when the planks were on the ground in 1978.

Thank you for not destroying these beautiful background noises with background music. There are lots of videos on YT, which are reduced by the music layover. Is is very rewarding seing you work so patiently on your cabin.

Good for you for salvaging those roof tiles. It's crazy to me that someone would just let those wonderful things be abandoned. Also, where is your kitty friend? He might be a good mouser to keep around!

For a while I wondered why you put birch bark by the perimeter of your roof, and then I thought that maybe it was because you haven't got a water duct to get rid of rainwater, is that so?

I didn't think that clay tiles could stand up to the Swedish freeze/ thaw cycles without cracking to pieces. Did you not nail the last row down to the roof like you did at first?

Birth control. If more young people kept busy to doing what he is doing and living, the world would be a better place. Kudos to his parents for raising a responsible human

Curious, does stripping the bark off the tree like that result in death of the tree? I thought thst bark played a part in the transport of water and nutrients?

Surprised this hasn't been asked more but for us unknowledgeable folks: What is the purpose of the birch bark around the rims of the tiles?

Birch bark is a really good material, for many things. The old way of doing things often has a better result than with several new tricks.

I like that you can repurpose the tiles, but will the old barn be saved? It still looks like the logs and such are in good shape.

When you ring bark a tree ( take all of the bark around it) the tree will die. You pick up fallen tiles but killed a lot of trees.

High school biology says a tree with its bark stripped will soon die. It has been 1 year; are the trees dead?
