Orchid Care Tips Garden Answer Mark: Hi Laura, ---I'm desperate here for help-- I received an orchid from Grocery Store--A gift from a friend actually. --Phalaenopsis. I am so new with orchids. I took it out of the pot and the roots were covered in this spongy mossy type stuff which looked like it was ruining the roots. I took as much of that stuff off as possible. Some would not come off because the roots really stuck to it. I took some lava rocks that I got from a neighbor and a clay pot with holes on the side and bottom. I watered it first with tap water. and placed them in the sunniest window I could find but not too sunny where they would burn. I have been able to put it out side and get some nice sun and warmth (70-80F). I have drenched/soaked it a couple of times as well in Distilled water (2-3 days apart. I have been checking the roots and they seem to be going through a dying phase because they look dry and shriveled and some browning. I trimmed away the roots that look dead. Still using the Lava rock. Wondering what I am doing wrong. The remaining roots feel hardened and stiff and greenish to pale white. Are the roots drying out too fast? Should I drench and soak more often like everyday? Should I switch to pea size gravel? I do see another flower spike climbing up along the side of leaves. Don't want to lose anymore roots (barely has any now) Don't want to lose spike. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Much. Mark

I love your videos and envy your energy. I love seeing the kids and cats, you and your husband and always looks forward to your videos. I agree about the ice cubes. There were ice cube orchids marketed where u used three ice cubes to water. First its cold. Second it evaporates to quickly and the orchid roots cant utilize the moisture. There are all kinds of gimmicks around. I just water or feed, let drain and do this once a week outside or every 10 days or so inside. Also a humidifier is wonderful.

I have one of these I was given in the summer of 2020 and I wasn't sure how to take care of it. I repotted it, but there seem to be many roots above the potting mix's surface. They're going out in all directions around the crown. Should I replant and see if I can bury more of the root system? It also now only has one leaf because the others started looking wrinkled (prune like) so I clipped them. I'd really like to save this plant because it was a gift.

Please help! I rescued this amazing orchid and I bought it cause these ones are not staked they are left to just grow wild and i am so in love with it. but i noticed it didn't look to happy the flowers themselves are very limp and not firm like they usually should be but the leaves are nice and firm. so with that being said what could be going on with it i dont like droopy flowers i want them firm and perky so what could be going on?

mine has been blooming for a whole year, believe it or not. Maybe because she intertwines to my plumeria tree and is sooooo beautiful and full of flowers. The roots are huge, and there are many stems and the original pot that came in. I need to replant it and haven't planted it again because I don't know how to do it. I can't find a video to see how is done yet. Anybody has any suggestions?

Moving to the west coast my friends and family have been giving plants as gifts. Plants that I never had on the east coast to boot! I had to give up 99% of my plants when I moved. Just received one as a birthday gift and orchids are new to me. It was already outgrowing the pot! The roots are outside of the clear container. Lol. This was very informative. Thank you so much!

I just got my first orchid today, I dropped a pretty penny on him he was 25$ because his flowers are insane. Idk it's specific name but these flowers are these purple/pink/white iridescent look with veining all through it, it took my breath away when I seen him. They had cheaper ones but I couldn't pass this guy up. i have 85 plants but this i my FIRST orchid!

Your video was so helpful! I just purchased my first orchid- it was on a discount table at the grocery and I felt that it needed a chance in life. It will live in my office but the only window I have is a south facing window with a lot of direct sunlight. Would you recommend I shade the roots with a little handmade canopy or to shade the entire plant?

If you look at the back of fertilizer orchid mix is just half the concentration of regular house plant fertilizer, pour half the houseplant fertilizer in a different container and fill the rest of the bottle with water. Usually they are the same price but orchid fertilizer is half strength so it works out much more expensive

I adore Orchids but I've never owned one because I felt I would kill it with kindness. I will have to get the Orchid mix soil and the right type of pot for them then maybe they have a good chance of survival. I am so thankful for you wealth of knowledge and information. Thank you for sharing with us!
