Planting Root Pouches Garden Answer Nadine: I live in Canada and have tried these and I love them. I've placed them on my deck with tomatoes, pea's, bean's, pepper's, and strawberries, they all did great! Can't seem to grow anything in my dirt 4x6 ground plot, but these pots are amazing! I even planted a blueberry bush and a saskatoon bush, the blueberry bush died, but now that I've looked into blueberries, I think it's more to do with never fertilizing it and the wrong soil. The saskatoon bush, however, is still alive! It's the third year I had it in one of these cloth pots This spring it's got green leaves on it, and we got two weeks of -40 degrees Celsius, much colder than our normal minus 20-30 degrees Celsius. It was sitting outside on my deck with no protection. The saskatoon is a very hardy plant, but I think the bag helps. I'm just learning about gardening, but if I can grow in these bags then other's can too! Give them a try, I think you will like them. I live in zone 3 so, it's much more difficult to grow nice lush plants. so finding a product like this that helps me is very nice!

thank you for the video. I love the little bags, and the colors! In my small urban garden, I had my husband build wooden shelves along our fence, topped with J-drain (rolled corrugated drain board) and then the root pots sit on top of that. This way, the root pot is not sitting directly on the wood, and I don't need a bunch of saucers, which allows me to fit in more root pots, each snuggled up against the other. The J-drain I hope will prolong the life of both the bags and the shelves. I have about 30 of one size pot, 5 gal. and if I need a shorter size to grow herbs, I just roll the top edge over to the outside and tuck in the handles. I also add extra vermiculite (I always have bags of it on hand as I use it in all of my pots, fabric and clay) to aid moisture retention. I put about two cups vermiculite to a 5 gal fabric pot and 1 cup to a 5 gal. clay pot.

I have seen some videos on these grow bags/ root pouches, but none were anywhere near as thoughtful and/ or comprehensive as this one. I am in the midst of trying to see if I can purchase them here in Canada. I absolutely love that they are made from recycled bottles.
One question I have as an apartment dweller, what do I do with them in the wintertime? Do I leave the soil out in the bags? Or do I dump the soil? I could dump the soil at my parents house and repurchase potting mix next year I guess.

Laura I planted some petunias in a wired basket lined with landscape fabrics. The flowers bloomed like crazy but the good drainage meant watering twice a day still with some wilting shocks in between. I was going to try placing a shallow saucer in the bottom of the soil to keep some moisture this year but I haven't gotten to do it. Or I may mix some diaper beads in the soil. Hope to see your updates if water evaporation in cloth pots poses a problem. Thanks Ms Fearless Ingenuity!

I love these! We were planning on doing some raised beds for veggies in our yard but dont really have very much space to spare since we have 4 kids that like to take up most of our outdoor space (about 1/2 an acre back yard) and these will be perfect and much easier than building a couple raised beds AND will prevent me from planting more veggies than our family can use! Going to order 3 100 gallons! Thanks so much for sharing! I absolutely love your videos!

The main purpose of root pouches is that the air actually prunes tree and shrub roots to keep them from circling which prevents later transplants from choking themselves to death. I used them for tree cuttings to mature before planting in the ground. I discovered that it is really hard to keep the soil moist in those pouches, calling for much more watering.

Can you explained a little more on what they are made from? It sounded like all of the pots you posted here were from recycle bottles. What I read in descriptions on the web is there is only one size? that is actually made from water bottles? The others were made from felt? I would love it if all were made from recycle products. donna

I've tried something similar. I'm interested to see how you keep them watered especially the full sun ones. in my case everything around the edges dries out and when you pour water in it Cascades over the sides and doesn't soak into the soil. I have a few 2 gallon pouches that I'm working with. awesome idea for the gift bags!

The raised bed and large pouches directly on the ground look very good and seem quite practical. BUT, what sort of tray for use on a table top or deck or patio would look good with the pouches? I cannot imagine using the pouches on these surfaces without protection.

I have a question about that raspberry bush. Our new home has no flower bed/garden space so we are doing container gardening. I will be building a planter box for raspberries (I make my own jam, how much does the raspberry shortcake yield? Does it have thorns?
