Arborvitaes look great and as you said a great choice as a wind break, view blocker, and privacy/cozy hedge. Too bad they dont grow in my sunset zone 9 8(. Bah hum bug. Love the process, keep the videos coming. We so need a show like this here in the U. S.. like Gardeners World and Gardening Australia. Really agree that HGTV needs to include you on their roster. They really dont have any shows representing gardening for the G in HGTV. And for those in CA. that can garden almost year round it would be great to have more gardening represented in the colder months. like you do. Indoor/outdoor arrangements, house plants, bulbs etc. Congrats on your Baby Boy again!

fun thing with thujas. you really dont need landscape fabric. they naturally kill weed, around them and they also naturally mulch the soil underneath themself. reason? well they drop branches, needles, wich contains natural weed inhabitants and they shade out pretty much anything growing underneath the trees. same goes with fir and pine trees so there is really no need for garden landscapefabrics at all. but it keeps things looking neat, and tidy for a while atleast, until, wind rain and snow messes the mulch and start tearing at the fabrics. anywho. It looks allready stunning and pretty, and after a few years they will have grown huge: )

I really love all that you do and wonder where you get the energy to get it done. I really would like you to think of incorporating more fruit trees into your landscape. Not only will your bees help you in that area but your soon to be son will also enjoy this. Please, this is not a criticism but because of your ability to source the trees and talk about care and pruning to keep them looking presentable, it would help lots of your subies think of edible alternatives in their landscapes. Also, don't worry about the mom's brain it's a side effect of being pregnant and it never goes away completely.

Can emerald green be kept in shape using automatic trimmer? It would go faster, right? Or is it not recommended on theses branches? we plan to fence the property with about 150 of these emerald trees, but she is concerned that after 6 or 7 feet tall they will block the sun to gardening. Can their upward growth be limited, and how hard is it gonna be? Does planting them in 20 gallon containers achieve this? Can their roots be pruned at all to achieve this etc.

Is North Pole Arborvitae the same as Brandon Cedar or Skybound Cedar? They look the same. Im also wondering if youre planting these in full sun? Im also looking for an evergreen that doesnt get too wide, in a full sun spot and Im in zone 3. The Brandon cedars are a very good price at Home Depot and they recommend full sun but this variety is also sold at local nurseries but they recommend only part sun. Any recommendations you have would be great!

Laura, I need advice. We planted Green Giant Arborvitae about 5 years ago. They've filled in beautifully. Problem is, I think the roots are slowly taking over my flower bed (in front of the row of arborvitae. I dug a hole for a new perennial and kept running into what looked like threads of roots coming from the arborvitae. Will I have to move the flower bed?

Arbovitae don't age well, are prone to diseases, especially when pruned, and cannot bear hard pruning in case you need to rejuvenate the hedge. In your climate I would plant yew any time.
It may be a little slow growing in the beginning but it will last for generations.

I planted 11 arborvitaes about 3 years ago and they are growing slow. I think one reason is that I didn't water that much and didn't install a drip hose system but only watered them when i had time. one even died. Any advise on how to make grow faster and wider?

Planted 20 7 emerald green arborvitae 3 weeks ago and are noticing some interior browning Should I be concerned or is this normal. Water 3-4 hrs a day. With soaker hoses used Espoma Biotone when planted now cutting water back to every other day.
