Flower Bed Cleanup! Garden Answer Barbara: I would call someone who has knowledge on what to do with that nest. It freaks me out! What did you put in your plant bed for mosquitoes? You always blow me away with how you know every plants name. I love planting daisies at our old place but with deer I dont know. We think the deer wont come in our backyard because of out two big black labs( Rex and Faux Paw. We can see the deer run down the fence of our neighbor when our dogs are barking at them you just see the antlers at the top of the fence going up and down as the deer run away. We used to have a huge male deer who loved to sleep under our trees in the morning or at night. We called him our deer guard. Lol. But since the fire we havent seen him, I pray he made it through the fire. I liked having our own deer guard oh yes with him we could come and go and he didnt run away: ) Have a blessed week and thank you.

Contact your Conservation Office and they can tell you what to do in your state. In Missouri I found a hornets next built under out deer stand days before deer season (early November) and this is what the Missouri Conservation Department advised us to do. At night (has to be dark) when they are not active we scraped hornets nest off bottom of wooden deer stand into a large plastic bag and immediately close it up. He put bag in our freezer as he wanted to use the nest for decoration in cabin. You would need to cut off limb into a large plastic bag but it would be dangerous as it's so high in tree. PS. did not open bag till following year in summer. Good Luck

Great video, I love when you show us how to maintain your flower beds, it's very helpful when it comes to the care of our own flowers and shrubs, it's very appreciated. thanks so much Laura, it was also so wonderful to see Cheddar, what a cute kitty. As far as the hornets nest, it looks like it's pretty high up and wasn't really noticed till just recently. They will die off in the winter and then if you want you can get rid of the nest then, as long as it isn't a problem around your garden or outside things then leave it alone. Thanks for a another great video, bye for now.

With the hornets nest. it is high up, you can hire a professional like a bee keeper who is legally able to remove it, or if you have someone who can get up there, I just learned a great new way from another video of using a clear small bucket of soapy water to dunk the hive into. Do it in the evening when theyre dormant and at home. Works great with hornets and wraps! No more chemicals. Just be careful! I have bees and a suit so Im a bit more daring. Good luck! Stay safe.

Thats a bald faced hornets nest. They are actually a yellowjacket wasp, not a true hornet. They will aggressively defend their nest, but that one is so high up it may be safer to just leave it. They will die off in winter and dont return to a nest in subsequent seasons. They should be gone by mid to late September in your area. If you do decide to remove the nest, get a professional to do it. Those gals are no joke when defending their nest!

Hey Laura, I really appreciate these maintenance videos, learning about the tools and products you use, etc. I learn so much. Wondered about the daisies, I had some that I deadheaded mid summer same way you did. There were new buds that I left, but they never grew and re-bloomed. Can you think of a reason why they didn't come back? I'm in zone 6. Really enjoyed them and want them to do better next year.

Awesome video Laura! I did the same to one of my flower beds which has shasta daisies, cat pajamas cat mint, delphiniums and hardy geraniums, cut them all but need to feed and mulch. Got to hot outside we had plus 30 degrees (and humid which accounts to plus 40) here in Ontario Canada, not as hot as at your place but for us it is very hot, I cant even imagine the temperatures you have.

We had a hornets nest just like this last year in the eave of the house. They mind their own business and the rain and winter will take care of it. They will move on. I would leave it alone since it is so high up in the tree.
Amazing that they can build such a nest. Flower bed looks much better. I think I would trim up the blue grass a little bit.

Kind of amazing how they build those nests. We had to have a hornet nest removed from a boxwood because it was right next to the garage and foot traffic. Hornets can get pissed off quite easily! So the mosquito bits work right away to repel them so you can garden? Ill have to try that.

Do you really make a list ands constantly add to and mark off? Im just thinking. Thats a great idea. Im a list person for sure but havent done one for my yard chores. Hmmm. Beautiful progress with your summer garden and thanks so much for continuing to film and post. Its really helpful.
