Landscape Makeover Pt 5: Looking at Rocks and Planting More Shrubs Garden Answer Jane: It is so much fun to watch your progress! As to the stone, may I suggest not spreading the stone around the perimeter. My thought is perhaps three groupings of two or three stones placed very deliberately. One group in the front corner the most massive group of three. Then a group near the front door for visual interest and follow through. Lastly, the middle section of the front bed. This a set of two smaller than the corner group. The missy rocks looked so much like the stonework on the front of the house. I think they would be so interesting. Hope my suggestions are helpful. The folks at the stone yard are a wealth of information.

I love everything that you do, Laura, but this is too much in such a small space. Too many single type plants. I think that more closer to the house would have been nice, but this is sort of a race track look in a very small front yard. I truly love you and your gardening expertise. I think because the front yard is so small, maybe you tried to bring too many different things to it. My hard is big also. I try to do mass plantings in my gardens. Just felt that I should be honest. The house is small, the yard is small, the garden should be more condensed near the house IMO. LOVE you!

I think 3 to 5 rocks might be a better choice. I feel like 7 might make the yard feel a bit heavy. I agree with you that the darker rocks are the best choice. They would compliment the foliage of the plants you have chosen, and blend with the house colors perfectly. Have you thought about maybe a stacked shale water feature by the front porch! That would be kind of fun! Maybe a Birds Nest Spruce at the corner by the driveway would work. They are low growing, and don't get very big. I did that in my yard and it looks amazing.

three boulders on driveway corner and two uneven sized on other corner is about all that landscape will handle without looking too contrived. Love the changes and following the series. Hope you do more of these. I start my day with your posts and appreciate your weather reports as I deal with hot and dry as well and you prove you don't have to live in a mild climate to have a beautiful garden.

Love these types of videos! would love too see more of what you have planned in the garden for Benjamin! I have two children under 5 and would love to make the garden a fun and exciting place for them! Already planning a pea teepee for next year! (on a much smaller scale ) Again I love your videos Laura and Aaron and look forward to your uploads so so much! :)

Love this staged progression of building a garden. Because it's slowed down you're able to spend time covering the details of decisions, placement, choices of plants, etc. Excellent video series. I've already referred it several times to beginners asking questions on the FB fan group.

Just curious before I start on another section for a landscape bed or flower bed, Ive heard of this no dig method where you lay newspaper on the sod then compost and soil mix on top eventually the newspaper decomposes is this true and is it effective or should remove the sod?

Hey Laura! I'm loving your videos! They've changed the way I think about gardening. I'm wondering if we can get an update on this yard? I love the plants you chose and I'm considering several for my own yard. I'm looking forward to seeing how these are growing!

I know this is from a year ago, but I have been going through your videos and was so excited about this one because I am a beginning gardener and this set of videos has given me a lot of advice. One comment. Did you know video part 4 is set to Private?

Could you please mention the dimensions of the flower beds in your videos? I have two 10 feet wide garden beds and could not figure out if we could use your 3-plants-per-type grouping or should place them side by side. Thank you!
