Sonic Bloom Red Weigela Update Garden Answer Nia: I need your educated opinion! I love weigelas, but proven winners says up to zone 8, yet other nurseries say the wine and roses cultivar (my fave) is up to zone 9. In my CA zone 9b, we usually have mild winters that dont dip below 32 degrees very often, long periods of drought, (weve been lucky the last 2 winters & officially ended our extremely long drought, high winds (frequent gusts 20-30mph, low to no humidity & high summer heat (up to 115 degrees for a week or longer, w/consistent 105-110 from June or July-October. This past fall & winter were so warm w/beneficial rainfall, that all of my pepper plants from last spring stayed alive & are now reproducing for their 2nd summer & my bougainvilleas started blooming in February! Im wondering if since weigela are hardy well below freezing, the zone 8 cutoff is due to the heat of zones 9a/b? If the shrub gets afternoon shade/protection from the height of the days heat & winds, could it possibly work in this climate? Do you think theres any way I could make it work in zone 9b? Or do I need to stop fantasizing about having the wine & roses weigela in my garden? Thank you for sharing your advice & knowledge w/us fellow plant geeks! We appreciate all your hard work darling!

I love your videos! The video with the blooper where the window box fell was (funny) and key in turning my meh flower boxes into the wow factor! My neighbors keep asking me gardening questions as if I am an expert: ! I am just about to buy one or two quarts of the Sonic Bloom Pink or Red Weigela. But I pictured fast growth this year that would provide semi privacy in front of a fence. Can you tell me how long it would take to get 4-5' covereage? And also, we have super thick Colorado clay. This plant popped up as one that grows well in clay. Can I plant directly into it? Happy summer!

Laura, Love your videos! I have two of these weigela that we planted in the spring of 2019. They bloomed twice this year and are so big that the branches almost lay on the ground. I think each plant is about 8-9 feet across. Also, with our humid weather here in NC the leaves are getting yellowed and have brown spots. Im wondering if it is a fungus of some sort. Can I prune these long branches back a foot or so? I was told the cuttings could be used to start new plants. Should I treat them with a fungicide or give them more food? Any ideas? Thank you.

I bought three pink sonic weigelea without flowers in late May and planted them in my wooden planters with dripping system once a day, then left for Europe. When I came back, two of them grew larger but have a few flowers on the end of some brunches and the third one was much smaller without flowers. Do you know why? How to make them have more buds? Can I trim or prune them now in early August? The same to our sonic azalea that is supposed to bloom all summer lon, but there is not even one flower. I am very puzzled. Please help. Thanks!

Weigelas are wonderful (we have two red ones -- Red Prince, I think. We have a great father and son gardening duo here in Canada, Mark and Ben Cullen. Just recently, Ben was discussing how important it is for our bees to have early access to food, and he mentioned that weigelas, with their early blooming in May, provide a wonderful start-up for them. Got to keep those pollinators happy! Keep up the great work, Laura and Aaron. Your cheerful videos make my day. The cat cameos of Russell and Essie are the icing on the cake. ;)

You inspired me to plant a weigela last year (not this exact variety, but unfortunately, my garden center sells very little Proven Winner plants (and I have truly found their plants are hardier) and mine has hardly grown at all (I mean no real visible growth! I hope it starts to take off soon because watching this video reminded me of how much I love the look! I love these before and after videos because it gives me something to benchmark against since I often buy what you show in your videos. Thank you.

my red prince is acting like a red sonic bloom. It's blooming again mid summer: full beautiful blooms all over the shrub, did I luck out with perfect soil and weather conditions or is this normal for red prince? Imagine this, and I was going to go out and get a sonic bloom red but now I guess I don't have to. By comparison my Weigela Victoria, has exactly three new mid summer blooms only. So it must be the Red prince also continuously blooms.

Oh no your whole foot went in that muddy hole and I tried not to laugh but you always give me a good laugh I needed that too thanx Laura. You should do a whole video on all of the bloopers that you have on video even if it's a long one I'd watch it, pop me some popcorn, get a soda and sit back and relax. Love all your video because you are an inspiration to the world.

Laura is totally my kinda girlfriend! I love how her shoe was totally caked in mud and she doesnt even mind it. Just wash it off and keep going! When Im putting in annuals I love wearing my sandals! Just grab the garden hose and wash the feet and hands off! Planted my first Spilled Wine right by my driveway so when I pull in I see her beautiful colors.
