Companion Planting Basics Garden Answer Judy: I used nasturtiums last year with my tomato plants, it worked well except that they really stole a LOT of nutrients from the tomato plants. For that reason be watchful for that and stay on top of it. Also, how do you recommend to rid the aphids once they appear on the nasturtiums? My nasturtiums were covered and I just pulled them out and threw them in the yard waste bin. The nasturtiums did naturally appear this year because they reseeded themselves, which was a nice surprise. :-) I love your videos, thank you for making them.

Concerning aphids, take a couple of tomato leaves, crush them and put them into a gallon container. Fill with water, let set for 24 hrs, then strain out the leaves and pour into a spray bottle.
You now have a solution that will kill aphids shortly after you spray your tomato plants.
Be SURE to spray UNDER the leaves as well because that's where they like to hide.
I use this EVERY TIME I see aphids because it WORKS wonders.

Quick question! The host plants for aphids; won't they just attract more aphids to your garden? I plant butterfly weed for monarchs and sometimes they get covered with aphids. I would love to use host plants for the aphids like you suggest Laura but I'm afraid it may actually attract more vs helping? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Do you have any advice for transplanting Lilacs? We have a bunch of bushes in my front yard, all between 1 and 3 feet tall.
I am moving into my own home next month and I would love to take some of them with me to plant, as they were my fathers favorite flowers before he passed away.

I love your vegetable garden videos so much. They have prompted me to start planting herbs (have to start small) and I cant even begin to describe how happy it makes me to be able to go outside and cut fresh herbs to use in my kitchen. Thank you so much for being my garden teacher.

Another companion plantng you can try is to plant summersquash, sunflowers/corn (depending on what you want) and pole beans/peas together. The corn/sunflowers will serve as support for the beans or peas and the squash will cover the ground. :D

Wish I had known that about chives before buying on sale 10 years ago. Finally dug them all out this summer after they took over my adjacent perennial garden. They were garlic chives which were bigger thugs than regular chives! NEVER again!

What if I want to keep nasturshums, I heard you. An put them in salads because they are edible, and so pretty, but I did not know about the acids, and you are so right, they eat up the nasturshums. Any ideas. Or other host plants for aphids?
