Potting Calla/Canna Lilies & Yarrow Starts! Garden Answer Mary: Laura, your videos have impacted me in more ways than I could ever have imagined. I have added several raised beds to my back yard, added many of your floral mentions both annuals and perennials (dahlias were a big hit last year, this year dinner-plate dahlias awaiting their appearances in the planters. I am so looking forward to harvesting my many vegetables and fruits from my trees, Anna Apple, Peaches, Pomegranates, Persimmons, Black Cherry & Pear. I also have a Tilton Apricot tree on the way to plant. My fig tree did not make it, so the Apricot will take its place. Since my peach tree is loaded this year with fruit forming, did you mention in a previous video that it is a good thing to thin out the fruit on trees to better manage the quality of fruit provided? I can't remember. I watch so many of your videos, they tend to blend into one another in my memory. I value all your advice and have incorporated many of your suggestions over the years. We eat healthier because of your videos. Thank you, your family, your parents, Benjamin, Samantha Grace, Russell, Cheddar, your sister for her work ethic (amazing girl. Your dad never hesitates to give good advice over the phone when questions asked. Your entire family circle is a blessing. Thanks for all you do for gardeners everywhere. Looking forward to seeing the garden developments around the Hartley.

Everytime you talk Abt what the weather's doing it's so weird that it's the same thing going on on the completely opposite side of the country over here! It's 10 pm now but swear the wind and rain has been going since New Years! I have two months of paper in a huge pile in my kitchen because the weather has been too bad to burn fires. And just Abt an hour ago I couldn't believe the stuff stopped blowing outside. It don't even feel normal? ! I potted Canna a mth ago. I had a sunny day and thought I'd put them out for some light. Maybe the sun burned the leaves but I was thinking it was because it was so cold and windy when the sun went down. They kinda lost 30 percent of their life. Using grow lights on them now. We shall see!

Hi Laura, thanks again for all your knowledge about plants and how to take care of them. I have a question about dahlias, Im getting ready to plant six in a galvanized wash tub, ( idea stolen from you) and am wondering if I need to feed them with Espoma water soluble plant food Every two weeks during the summer to keep them blooming, or just use flower tone along with biotone when planting.
Thanks again for all the awesome videos you post and we all wait for with baited breath!

Do you worry about your beautiful wedding ring when working with the dirt? I didnt used to ever take mine off but after some years, the crown and prongs were (unbeknownst to me) wearing down and no longer holding in my diamond. I nearly lost it! I was told by the jeweler to remove my rings when working with chemicals (including dish soap, dirty jobs, and even when I was sleeping.

I just bought Cleopatra canna lilies this year so I was so glad to see yours - beautiful! I know how to grow and have overwintered rhizomes in my garage zone 5 with success. However, I wanted to know if I pot early (usually put in pots outside once warm weather is here) with a heat mat inside would that work? I do not have a green house. Loved the video!

Finally! Ive been trying to figure out which side is up on my caladiums for two seasons now! I was really getting frustrated with failing at them. I know you said previously that you dont think people pre-sprout them, but if you can find them in the store in a pot, doesnt that mean they were pre-sprouted?
reply

Questions, I recently got some caladiums rhizomes and I heard that if you dig out the eyes and let them sit for 24 hours or so before you plant them, that it will develop more eyes than before? I just planted mine but is too early to see if that works or not. Have you heard this? what are your thoughts?

Laura, I love cannas. Particularly my Alaska which is as white as a canna gets. But help! Grasshoppers have eaten my cannas two years in a row. What do I do? What gets rid of them? The cannas look like sieves when those little nasties get finished. Gardening in Austin, TX, zone 8b but heading towards 9.

I love cannas! I love collecting different colours and have them growing all around the boundary of our property as part of a living fence that Im creating. We dont get snow here where I am in Australia, and the cannas provide visual interest all year round with minimal effort on my part.

You mentioned hardening off and I thought yikes, she has a LOT of seed trays to harden off! Do you have a plan formulated? I know some of your tables in the greenhouse have wheels, perhaps wheel the whole table in and out? I love seed starting but dread the tedious hardening off process.
