Planting 2 Holiday Centerpieces & Finishing the Eastside Pots for Winter!
video description
The deer situation will depend on the harshness of the winter and where the tastiest food sources are in your neighborhood. Deer will eat almost anything for survival in a frigid, long winter. We have deer move through our two acres, but honestly rabbits wreak the most havoc in our landscape.

Our area is booming with people clearing land and building houses, even more than your neighboring subdivision. This disrupts nature s patterns and habitats, including deer. As the deer (and groundhogs and black bear and birds) have moved, I ve lost a lot of evidently delicious plants and am slowly replanting with things that aren t as tasty. I do NOT mind doing it because where are they going to live once we concrete and over-design landscaping and pump the land full of chemicals? I love seeing our deer just outside our back sliding door on the bank, and one even gave birth in the side yard last spring, and the mom felt safe nesting it here while she was out foraging during the day. We re on 1. 3 acres but luckily surrounded by a 1000 acre farm, so we welcome all the wildlife we can get, and in the time we ve been here and stopped the previous owner s commercial lawn service and chemicals, have seen a glorious rebound. Now I have milkweed for the monarchs, perennials for the birds and butterflies, herbs at the border for the deer, 8 feeders for the birds, and water for them all. When we have a long or bad winter I might lose plants in the spring to hungry deer, but I m okay with that! For us, they bring so much joy, and they have so much less territory due to humans that someone here has to care.

oh no! Say no to the deer! They will eat all your green wreaths and they will eat your tulips before they bloom. They eat roses too! It's a mom and her babies. They will never leave and they teach their babies to graze in that area. I lived in the forest with deer for 20 years and I know what I'm talking about! They bring fleas and ticks. Get a livestock dog to guard your land. Deer are the worse thing going for any gardener. I'd rather have rabbits and spider mites than deer! They eat fast and love sticks/shrubs for their winter diet. They will sleep on your land too. Look for beaten own grasses. They ate my shrubs to the ground every winter. They eat evergreen wreaths and will even eat your Halloween pumpkins on your front porch. They never pass thru your land without eating something or everything. They could eat your entire garden in one winter. I am not exaggerating either. Their teeth are like clippers and they can eat thru one inch bushes like pruning shears. They love, love sapling trees. They snipped my willows to sticks. I loathe deer!

Oh dear. you do have deer. I remember, in one video, you said there wasn't a deer problem. I have a lot in my area. Every morning, you will see groups of up to ten meandering in the backyard. They are so tame, that some will come up to you, but not totally. I have very small gardens in the front and back (townhouse/condo area, so I use a spray, Deer Out, and it really works. but not smelly like other sprays. It smells a little minty. It's pricy. so probably not a cost effective solution for the size of your property, if deer start to graze on your gardens. A good deer fence would probably be best. I find that in the winter, the damage can be worse, since food isn't as plentiful and would eat shrubs/trees. stuff they wouldn't normally eat. Nothing is 100% deer proof. Deer are pretty and enjoy seeing them. I have mixed feelings of them, though.

Those deer will move in once they start munching. I had to spray repellant on our shrubs right up to snowfall, and now they come to the bird feeders every night. Oh and we also have to put up 6 tall metal fencing around our cedar hedge to keep them out of that. Our area has developed so much that we and one neighbour are the only large pieces of land left, so the deer and turkeys live in our woods and forage in the gardens. Gardening in the country is a challenge for sure! Loved the centerpieces!

Oh my gosh the deer walking through the Christmas lights. Priceless. I know that deer normally prefer to stay up higher in altitude in the hot summer and come down into the valleys in the winter. It is so very hot where you live, in the summer that I bet they will head up into the woods where it s a bit cooler in the summer or if they are really smart they ll do like I dud when I was in your area in July-and leave and go all the way across the state to the beach in west OR!

Two beautiful arrangements. Aaron is so supportive. What a good guy. When Laura said, Sometimes you want this and sometimes you want that. I could hear Black Sheep The Choice is Yours playing in my head. You can get with this, or you can get with that. How festive to see the deer ambling down the lane of lit trees. Let's hope they don't play any reindeer games in your gardens. How rewarding and convenient that you can harvest from literally your own back yard.

This painting technigue works with either spray paint (white or your favorite metallic gold, etc) or watered down matte acrylic paint. Cover your hand with a plastic sandwich bag, spray the paint quickly on fingretip area of bag and dab on surface OR dip fingertip area into watered down matte acrylic paint and dab on surface. Works beautifully on all surfaces - pottery, wood & glass for a distressed look. No clean up either! Blessings & prayers for your family.

I love your arrangements! They are stunning! I wish the garden centers in my area would offer a variety of things to make our own containers. They have the everyday basics. It seems they would rather offer pre-made arrangements which are nice but typical style and expensive. Obviously, the price includes the time it takes to make them. but it takes away the joy of doing it oneself. The Hartley is so beautiful.

I just love seeing the deer in the winter, and I absolutely despise them the rest of the year. It's a battle--I didn't get out soon enough with the Deer Stopper II last spring and didn't have hardly any tulips. Oh well if they stay for you, maybe Deer Stopper II will become a sponsor for you lol (I'm hoping that is not the case because your property is so beautiful)

Margie- I do not have a problem with wildlife. We have 2 water ponds. Gardens in the front, side and backyard. Our ponds are too deep for any of them so if they need a drink of water this does not bother me as no owl or raccoon can get to the koi or goldfish. We have wooded areas on both ends of our street and enjoy seeing the wildlife on occasion!

I m always amazed how many planets you put in and how great they look afterwards. Thank you for teaching us how to beautify our homes. I know my family really enjoys how far I have come and it s because I m learning from you guys. May the Lord bless you and Aaron for all your hard work. Know that there are folks like me praying for you guys.

Not knowing the names of tools on demand is just one more thing we can all relate to!
The deer are so pretty! My boyfriend is a hunter and he loves watching them do their thing as much as he loves the harvest. I just like to gather in the garden. we are a great hunter gatherer pair. The turkeys are much more destructive in our area!

The arrangements are very pretty but the deer will be back and eat everything. They are unsure now but once they realize what goodies you have they will be in heaven! That's how they acted here once I start planting. Now they don't even move even if I'm out there screaming at them. They eat everything. They sure are beautiful tho

Beautiful centerpieces, thank you for the inspiration! I wish I could leave the soil in my planters outside, and use the soil for my arrangements, but my pots crack in the winter. Great placements for your centerpieces, they are perfect for each space! Have a really beautiful rest of the day! Lots of love Kathy x (Ontario, Canada)

Lovely! I had a thought, what if you used the tall black and glass lanterns you have on hand from the Halloween decorating of the path from your kitchen. Then make temporary pillars from stones add the lanterns, candles greens and line the pathway from the Hartley to the house.
That way, you'd see the path during winter.

Beautiful arrangements as always. From personal experience I would advise you to put some kind of deer repellant down in February/March and repeat every month or so. I used to use Repels All with good results but switched to using milorganite. It is cheaper to use for a larger area and fertilizes as well.

Whelp, time to plant some stuff for the deer. I never understood being upset at the animals that are just trying to survive on the little bit of land that we haven't developed. Just plant a place up with stuff that will sustain them and make it easy to access - that will keep them away from your prized areas.

All of your planters turned out very well. I agree with you, concerning removing the white pointsettias from the one planter. Adding the branches to the planters is a good idea, and I also love the berries. Your Hartley is very nice. I wish I had one of these. A very pleasing, and relaxing video. Well done!
