AFFORDABLE Grow Lights That WORK! Sharing, buying, installing shop lights

Affordable grow lights that work! These simple shop lights are all you need to grow successful seedlings inside the home. Keep this particular type of bulb consistently 2-3 inches above the seedlings and move them up as the seedlings grow. Everything in this video can be found at a large hardware store. I purchased my wire rack at Target - but I have seen similar ones at the hardware store also. I found these Amazon links that may be helpful - Metal Storage Rack that is the same length as your shop light - T8 Fluorescent shop light fixture with one cool and one warm T8 fluorescent bulb - (Bulbs sold separately at your local hardware store)

Thanks for the info. I had gotten grow lights last year & they were the same kind. only difference is that I use 65000K bulbs verses a warm and cool bulb. When I had the T12 show lights 10 years ago, I remember they suggested to have a warm and a cool, but I thought I watch a video saying that wasn't necessary for T8. My seedlings all did well last year. One issue I had was dropping the S hook inside the light ballast & so I saw someone else use zip ties & then I don't have to worry about dropping the s hook inside.
Glad to know you are using similar lights to what I have as I was debating about moving to LED lights as they seem to drop in price a great deal.

I was using these T8's but i found some T8 LED bulbs that just fit into the fluorescent T8 fitting, you get a different starter unit to swap out as well. They use way less power, and they're around the same price. They put out more usable light (PAR) than fluorescents as well. You get shorter internodes and stronger growth, and your power bill will be cut at least by half. The fluorescents use 35w and the conversion LED's only use 18w per bulb. You can find them on Amazon and some local DIY stores are now selling them.

Thank you so much for the video on shop lights. I'm new to starting seeds indoor. I already have two shelving units because I'm a quilter. So, I have extra space to condense my fabric to free up one or two shelves.
The only seeds I've started in the past were zinna which I placed directly outside until desired size then planted in our flower beds.
Love your videos.

I have an active grow t5 light set (very expensive, and need more lights but don-t want to bite that bullet again. I also am in 6b/7a Northern AZ, short summer season, and I don-t know whether to go with T8 fluorescent or T5-s again? I just need more room and light to keep up-potted plants under the lights longer. What do you think of the difference between the LED and Flourescent lights?

Thank you so much for this informative video. On my way to lowes and Home Depot now. My lisianthus seeds are supposed to be here this week. Hope I-m not starting them to late. I-m in New York State zone 5b. Going to get the lights and shelves today and set up. This video was so encouraging and full of everything needed to know to set up. Thank you so much! --

Hi, thanks for the video, I-m watching from Australia and it-s winter now so looking at lighting options for indoor seedling starts. Just wondering why you need one warm colour and one cool colour bulbs? I was under the impression that cool colour bulbs are best for seedling starts. Thanks for your advice

Does anyone know what the rule of thumb is for distance of the light to the top of the tray? From day one, to week 2, week 3, etc? My tray has a humidity dome and I want to be sure it's close enough. Also, I'd like to understand more about when the lights have to move up to a higher setting. Thanks!

I plan on starting seeds in 2 10-x20- trays end to end on a 48- shelf. should I use 1 or 2 48- shop light units? I'm not sure if 1 light set up will give enough light to span the 10- wide tray. You are using 2 light set ups but you have more trays and they are sitting on your shelf differently.

HELP! The government has initiated an mandate that all florescent bulbs are to be phased our by 2023. Have you used the LED plant lights and are they as good? Do we need to make some kind of adjustments on starting our seeds indoors, ie changing the planting time? I'm in zone 6b

Walmart sells a 4 foot led shop light for 20 bucks. No bulbs to buy or hardware, so it's cheaper and puts out almost twice the light. Less money on operating as well. They are so efficient your plants will grow way faster. So plan accordingly. Grow on my friend!

Thank you Nancy,
Just what I been looking for at an affordable price.
I been using a heat matt, Matt, it's worked for me.
but I can only germinate 1 tray at a time.
I have a shelve with 4 racks on it that I'm ready to start with.
thank you.

Hello and Happy New Year! Towards the end of the video, you mention that you will have 6 lights on your shelves. Do you put 2 complete light fixtures per shelf, or were you referring to 2 lights in a fixture, 3 shelves, totaling 6 lights? Thank you!

Great video -. You can also use korean farming methods to save money on fertilizer and microorganisms. I spend about $10. 00/year. It really works. Check out Fermented Plant Juice and lacto bacillus microorganisms. Also Jadam. Blessings!

That was awesome thank you appreciate you going to store, as I went with just a list and it didn-t work out well had to go back and watch your video again- no one at Home Depot knew what a warm light was and sent me over to Lowell.

I like your common sense approach, thank you very much-my neighbor gave me a grow light but I-m not at all sure what kind of bulbs are in it. I did buy myself 2 heat mats, I-m gonna be prepared-I-m just a home gardener.

Your video is good but your link to the shop light isn't correct and just cost me $12 in return fees: ( The light you linked to requires a hard wire into a light source - not a plug like you have. Big bummer.

I need a grow light to keep my annual plants (I-m zone 5) and cuttings in my house through midwest winter in Nebraska. Is this ONLY for seedlings? I want to bring my hibiscus and coleus inside for winter

Thank you SO MUCH! This was super helpful. I'm into day 5 of germinating my seedlings indoors and off to the shop to get shop lights for them. Your content and explanation are so valuable. Thank you!

Couldnt find a single shop light fixture from Lowes or home Depot in 2022. They definitely have all the light bulbs though. Thank you for being informative but will probably go with grow LEDs: (
