Today I'm talking about cut flower garden layouts, and how to take the necessary measurements so that you know how many plants can fit into each bed. Cut flowers can be planted closer together than those used for landscape plantings. Common cut flower plant spacing is 6x6 inches, 9x9 inches, 12x12 inches, 18x18 inches, and 24x24 inches. You should be able to easily reach the center of your cutting bed. An ideal width is between 3-4 feet. Below you will find additional link to books, articles, and calculators on cut flower garden spacing. You can look up the spacing for a particular flower by searching the flower on the Johnny's

I-m planning out my garden now and am a bit confused on spacing for Dahlias. I have a raised bed 4x6- and have 3 dahlia tubers (dinnerplate - cafe au lait. I-m local to you, and so powdery mildew can be an issue. Can you tell me how you would space these in this bed? I plan to put other flowers next to them, but I-m not sure how close I can get. If I space them 12 or 18- apart from each other. is that square? I can put other flowers one foot away, or does it need more room. Since I-m not doing rows, I-m having difficulty finding this information. Thank you!

Thank you for this! I have a really. maybe dumb question. but how far in do you go from the edges of the bed? If you are spacing 9- in a 4ft bed and doing 5 across. that makes you right up against the edge of the bed, going in only about an inch and a half. Are you doing less spacing? I hope I-m not asking this in an incredibly confusing way!

I have an established garden but now want to add a cutting garden. This video was very helpful as I now can figure out the spacing and number of seedlings I am and will be growing this season in my basement. I have a small property, and in anticipation dug up and gave away some perennials (that didn't give me joy. lol) to friends. Thanks!

LOVED this video. I have been gardening for about 4 years and have a pretty good handle on seed starting but I-ve never planted my rows with enough density. Where can I find the links that you mentioned? Or can I just look on my seed packets and figure out a square size based on what-s suggested?

Great video. I'm visual as well so it was great to see your graph. I actually did that this year for my small little patio area so I know how much space I've got to work with. I also want to say I always think your make up looks so natural a beautiful! Love all your videos you are a great teacher.

I just planted some zinnias per the packages instructions (benary's giant. It's my first time and the package said to plant the rows 2ft wide and 6 inches apart. Should I be worried? I've seen many people recommend 12 x 12 after I planted them. Should I thin them out to 12 inches apart? Thank you!

Thanks Danielle! This was so helpful! I have just moved into a new home and there is very little planted around the house! I really want to focus on doing the cut garden along the perimeter of the house. If you have any other suggestions as to the dos and don'ts of this please share!

Super helpful video! I was so overwhelmed and now I see that I can just break my flower bed into sections and plan each section instead of trying to figure out one huge bed. Thank you! I don't know why it took your video to make me see something so obvious but I appreciate it.

When I started seeing you do math I was starting to sweat thinking -she-s going to do common core math- and at 48 I will never understand it! Thank you so much for doing normal math lol. I am a visual learner and I am so incredibly grateful that you actually broke out the math.

This is just what I needed! Thank you so much! I am overwhelmed by the amount of seed packets I have bought now that indoor sowing has begun. :. This gives me some feeling of control and a good place to start to begin organizing for my cut flowers this season!

This was really helpful. I'm planning my first cut flower garden behind my greenhouse and the area that I had tilled is not very big; simply because I'm not sure what I'm doing - Thanks for sharing. Now I know to go out and measure tomorrow and draw it up.

Very helpful video. I'm new to cutting flowers from the garden and did the first few last season and found that I inadvertently introduced a ton of garden bugs into the house. What do you do to free plants from bugs before you gift or sell them? Thank you -

This was exactly what I was looking for! Seriously thank you! I even got 2 4x8 raised beds for Christmas! I just want to ask would Benary-s giant and queen lime zinnias be close together if planted 6 inches apart? Thank you!

How do you balance this with succession planting? Are you planting the bed all at once? Or are you planting part of the bed and adding in some new snaps or zinnias every few weeks? Thanks! I love your videos!
reply

This is the best video I have seen on this! Thank you so much. Question about succession, do you just tear out the old dead flowers from the bed and then replant? I know sunflowers are hard to tear out!

THANK YOU! Seriously, I really, really needed this information! You have helped me out so much, I can't tell you how much I appreciate this! I was just starting to worry actually! Thank you!

I am 5'1- and use plastic stepping stones that I bought from Home Depot a few years ago, to walk to the middle or between plants. Even walk behind in some places.

I can do the math! But I'm at a loss with colors, design, placement, etc. I'm in the PNW and what I would give to have a garden buddy! Thanks for the great video!

This was a great video! Thank you for explaining how you do the cut flowers within the landscape. It seems so simple the way you put it and I really appreciate.
