Purple Foliage Shrubs bring depth, interest, and uniqueness to gardens. They can be used to create a cooling effect in the garden or provide a beautiful backdrop for bright perennials. They can be used to add contrast to otherwise green beds, as stand alone specimen plantings, or even used as green purple screens. Here are my personal favorites - Ninebarks - Not only are ninebarks beautiful in terms of color and form, but they are also North American natives that provide 4 seasons of interest. The bloom white or pink in spring, are followed by gorgeous seed pods, hold their leaves through fall, and the peeling bark adds interest in the winter. Pearl Glam Beautyberry - This plant delivers not only beautiful purple foliage, but also lovely purple berries in the late fall! This Callicarpa is more compact than the native species and I can never have enough branches to cut and arrange with. Winecraft Black Smokebush - If you like the color and leaf structure of smokebushes, but not their form then the Winecraft series is for you. These smokebushes have a rounded appearance and stay smaller than traditional smokebushes. Mahogany Splendor Hibiscus - While not a true shrub, I wanted to include this on the list as a money saving option. This plant is primarily grown as annual cut foliage, although it is considered a tender perennial in zones 8 and 9. Grow this from seed for almost no money at all and see if you like the look of a purple shrub in your landscape - Black Lace Elderberry - This lovely shrub has deep purple leaves and lovely light pink blooms. It makes a great purple screen or a stand alone specimen plant

Yes, yes, yes, to all of those beautiful choices! Danielle, seek out Purple Prince or Plum Dandy Alternanthera for next year. The purple foliage gets darker in Fall(they are still going strong even today and we've had two hard frosts. This is my second year planted this beauty amongst my flowers in the garden(usually just planted it in flower baskets before. I love how it accentuates the flowers and foliage around it. I planted lime green coleus and Proven Winners Supertunia Latte amongst the alternanthera in large swaths, it was gorgeous!

A couple of years ago I bought a hypericum inodurum which has the most amazing bright red - berries - in the summer. In my research I found out about a purple dark leaf variety, Albury Purple which I would like to get but it seems to be rare. Does anyone have experience with the purple leaf hypericum?
( I also love the variegated hypericum moserianum which is almost a ground cover. Sometimes called tricolor. I have a new seedling from it that has a solid lime green leaf, a bright chartreuse, that I am excited about! )

Don't forget the great part of the Elderberry is not just for the birds!
The berries are good to make a tasty syrup to take for immunity boost too!
I like to let the birds have the top half of the bush, the ones too hard to reach.
The rest are for me!

Don't forget purple heucheras. They might not be exactly a shrub but they're perennial and semi-evergreen, so they last almost all year long. They give so much color and you can just keep on dividing them every year until you have a big drift of them.

I think you should do an entire series on different colors, silver, purple, orange/bronze, chartreuse etc. I recently became obsessed with purple foliage! And I was trying to look for videos like this and I couldn't find many

You mention using shrubs in arrangements. Does it take a while for the shrub to produce new branches and can you remove to much foliage? Also, are their some shrubs that are fast growing and are not bothered by cutting?

Love purple leaf foliage and need to add more! We have two purple leaf flowering plum trees and they are so pretty! And like you, I love the Pearl Glam Beauty Berry! Your sweater color is perfect -

I added a ninebark this year too and can already tell I need more. I love the beauty berry too, it's very pretty. Thanks for focusing on purple foliage, my purchase list for next year is expanding!

Love the purple shrubs. are any of these deer resistant? I've grown the hibiscus and that is in my vegetable and cut flower garden with electric fence because we have such a problem with deer.

I love all your suggestions! Another purple shrub I love is the Sunjoy Mini Maroon barberry. This one is considered non invasive (but still may not ship to some states) and is just so pretty.

great video, as always-
wondering how heavily you can cut from a ninebark for bouquets? Mine is newly planted so I didn't want to cut any this year but hoping I can use some by next year.

Danielle, do you know if that beauty berry is reliably deer resistant? I-m looking to add a red or purple leaved shrub that is deer resistant and drought distant once established in zone 6.

I grew the hibiscus for the first time this year and loved it. Its vase life is so good too. Also really enjoyed red perilla which is an almost metallic purple sheen to its leaves.

I planted a nine bark this year because you introduced it to me! I love it. I also love the purple Heuchera. Not a shrub but definitely a staple in my garden. Take care!
