Putting Amaryllis Plants into Dormancy & Reblooming Them on a Specific Date / Amaryllis Flower Care

Today we're putting my amaryllis into dormancy so they'll rebloom next year. Dormancy allows us to control when an amaryllis will rebloom. Here's how I treat my amaryllis collection year-round. In winter after blooming remove the flowers and stalks to within an inch the bulb. If you grew the bulb in water rather than soil, transplant it into a pot with a drainage hole, leaving the top half of the bulb above the soil surface. After the bulb has flowered, it will send out 3 to 6 long, strap-like leaves. As with other flower bulbs, amaryllis use their leaves to produce energy for next year s flowers. During this time it's important for the plant to receive plenty of light. Grow your amaryllis like a houseplant for the rest of winter and spring. After danger of frost has passed, you can move the pot outside for the summer. Continue to water. In late summer or early fall, stop watering and move the potted bulb to a cool (50- 55 F, dry, dark location. A basement is ideal. The leaves will gradually wither as the plant goes dormant. Leave the bulb alone and don t water it. After your amaryllis has been in dormancy for 2-3 months you can bring them upstairs to rebloom. There s no rush, so if you have several bulbs you may want to start them at different times. Repot the bulb using fresh growing mix or top off the pot with new soil. Water once and move the pot into a bright, warm room. Water sparingly until the bulb is in active growth.

Hi Danielle,
My Neighbor gave me an Amarysillis kit for Christmas. I just started growing flowers so I hardly buy anything. Well I got the bug kept watching the discount store that's near by. The manager was arranging the shelf's in the closeouts. I got the whole shelf of the red Lyons for. 25 cents each. I been following you since then. I have too many to keep, do the ones I grew from seed. Need to go dormant or keep them growing? Most just have 2 leaves. Have a handful that have 4 or 5 leaves. I have no basement have a garage gets down to 33 degrees in winter Ohio zone 6 near lake Erie.

Please Remind me where you get those great pots you have for your gorgeous amaryllis? And what those pots are called? A link would be awesome if possible. Thank you. My collection is a baby compared to yours but it went from one to eight. Including a cheap waxed amaryllis bulb which Barely blossomed. So next year I peeled off wax, repotted it. It grew and blossomed so much bigger that next year. Will see what happens this year. I am trying to control myself and not buy more. hmmm.

You inspired me to do this, this year. I just brought my amaryllis that were outside, in a few weeks ago. All had grown lots of leaves. One of my southern hemisphere bulbs - Double Marquis - had a bud on it! It is now blooming with four flowers! What did I do wrong? When it quits blooming, should I treat it as a house plant and try to put it into dormancy sooner next year? My other bulbs are mostly all Dutch bulbs.

Hi Danielle, I like the way you shop on line for amaryllis add to cart, add to cart, add to cart, you deserve every single one of them! Your grandmother would be happy for you! I love the amaryllis arrangement you made! It's gorgeous. I bought my first amaryllis bulb last year because of you and it did great! now I'm kind of hooked on them too! Thanks again for the tutorial on the amaryllis care it's much appreciated.

I had to laugh when you said you don t know what comes over you when go out and buy more bulbs the same thing happens with me. I don t need anymore bulbs but each year I end up with more. Thank you for your amaryllis videos. I have learned so much and now I m crazy about amaryllis! There is something so satisfying about putting them in dormancy and bringing them out and having beautiful flowers in the winter.

Danielle, you had better go to some estate sales and find some more pots! I had my 12 amaryllis plants in pots outside this summer. I was ready to bring them in when I noticed flower stalks and buds on 2 of them. They bloomed beautifully, but I was really surprised that they did at this time! Can't wait to see your new collection! Funny how plants just seem to accumulate, isn't it!

After watching you float seeds, I did that with 8 seeds in water in a mason jar and currently have 2 that have been transplanted into potting soil. I am struggling knowing how to care for them inside. One is still floating but needs planted. I am looking forward to your videos! Even if mine do not survive I think it s a 3 year process it s been fun watching them grow in the water!

Last year, we accidentally forgot to put all our amaryllis plants outside. They were pretty young plants. The ones we put outside bloomed again; the ones we left inside didn't. They grew leaves just great but no flower stalk. This year, they all went outside in the partial shade. Hopefully, they will all bloom for us this year.

A amaryllis addiction is not a bad addiction to have! . That's how I am with dahlias. I keep adding and getting from different suppliers and when I get them I say Oops, I forgot about that order lol. I do add more amaryllis to my collection each year as well! Where do you like to order yours from?

Danielle - love this video. I will search your other videos to see if this is answered but do I separate out the daughter bulbs when I take my amaryllis out of dormancy and repot it? Do I throw away the mother bulb or do you continue to nurture her and see if she will continue to bloom?

Thank you so much for this instructive video. Need to bring my mini collection in this weekend for sure! (Zone 6b/7a) looking forward to seeing the baby bulb bloom this year. Where are you able to source your amaryllis pots? They seem to be hard to find.

I so enjoy your amaryllis content! I ordered 5 new amaryllis bulbs this year because I found myself rewatching your last year's amaryllis tours and I couldn't help it They give us something to look forward to during the cold months.

I took two bulbs out of dormancy because they had shoots. I think my garage isn t as cool as would be ideal? Anyway, one bloomed right away but no leaves and the other green leaves but no bloom. Any advice is appreciated

Help! Quite a few of my amaryllis that I summered outside in the ground, and just dug up, have red streaks on the leaves and /or bulbs. Should they be discarded or is there help for them? Thanks for your help.

I d like to know if you use specific pots and where you get them. I ve looked for the dimensions you talked about in previous videos but cannot find them anywhere. Thanks so much for your amaryllis content.

Danielle, what do I do with the daughter bulbs? Mine are very small and I ve already taken them away from the large bulb. Do you grow them as a houseplant for another year and then put them into dormancy?
reply

I just dug up my amaryllis! I had limited success last year but they look pretty good this year! Two questions, do you fertilize and what if you don t have anywhere quite that cool to place them?
reply

Just took my three, yes only three, bulbs into the basement today. I think I might be buying one or two more this year. Thanks for all the good information on amaryllis bulbs. Happy Gardening!

My friend gave me an Amaryllis bulb from her yard. I let it go dormant and then potted it last winter. It grew leaves but never bloomed and remains like that to this day. Odd!
reply

I d love to try this but I m in Alabama and even though I have a basement I don t think it gets or stays cool enough down there for them to go dormant.
