Living off the Land at the Log Cabin

Living off the Land at the Log Cabin

In this episode, I continue building the log cabin, cooking geese 2 ways on the campfire. I talk about my knives, my tarp and grill, and why I believe geese are an essential apocalypse, survival food component of a wilderness, living off the land lifestyle. To see exactly how I process fowl for the table, check out these three videos. The third one is specifically about processing birds; the other two are hunting/tripping/cooking videos. Bill: In addition to what you're saying Shawn, wild goose, ducks, and especially wild turkeys have the highest protein content of any wild mammal. Considering the grueling migration they endure every year it seems the ultimate wild food. Hard to beat for the flavour!

In oz its hard to find a cheap property, but not impossible. The banks dont like lending on lifestyle blocks, for the same reason you mentioned.
We have 109 acres in central west NSW. We were blessed to buy it outright.
It had no habiltal house on it, and we are living in our caravan. Technically your not supposed to camp on land for more than 60 days a year. but, there is a clause for rural properties that you can stay on a farm in a van, if your employed to do seasonal work. ok. bit of a stretch. There is no definition for seasonal work actually means.
There are a number exempt development building codes which we can avail ourselves of. 2 200 m2 farm sheds. 2 50m2 buildings which can be a garden shed, gazebo, studio room, etal. We can also build an annex for our van.
Interesting though we have the ruins of an old stone / split slab house. 10 years ago it was a functional house, but the mines who bought the place put an excavator through it. ( the mine never went ahead and we bought the land cheap. Anyways I digress. Because of the age of the house, we dont need need permits to fix it up. Because the mines illegally destroyed it, the house has never been decommissioned. Because an existing D. A / usage is there we dont need paperwork and permits to remake it - as long as it's on the same footprint.
We are blessed to have a lot of usable timber on our place to build with. The Australian/NZ method of building slabhouts is different to your methods. But we dont have snow. And our hardwoods are extremely heavy.

I have been following you for almost a year now. Just now I am able to go back and watch some older videos. You, more than likely, will not see my comment and that is fine. Im still going to share my appreciation for your work, sharing your work and the beautiful videos. I use Shazam to find music I hear whilst watching YouTubers I follow. I notice the titles of your choices fit the particular spot. For What Awaits (Daniel Kaede) fits perfectly for the portion where you are prepping a meal. Right now our air is filled with smoke from wildfires in the PNW. This, your beautifully relaxing videos have, has been my escape. Thank you. I also appreciate your wife and her sacrifices with sharing, and supporting, you and all that you do.

The Duck Liver is supposed to be chuck full of Nutrients. also. some of you out there prefer Nutella to butter your Bread. lol. hey, it s an acquired taste. great with a glass of wine. in France, they re big on Duck or Goose Liver Pates. them ducks use it to store their Energy before long trips. so it seems that Fatty Livers occur in Nature also. not just the force-feeding. Now, what about forest root or Berry Wine or Bring in a load of Apples and make Cidar. or wine? What recipees are out there. lol

Hi Shawn, when we where on the farm we used to butcher our own, turkey's, sheep, & pig's. I have old recipe books that have photos of pheasant's, ducks & rabbits hanging in the pantry, still with their fur and feathers, can you tell me why that is? Our sheep & pig's we hung overnight after skinning the sheep & cleaning the offal out of both, but the turkey's we plucked, butchered & cooked on the same day.

Hi Shawn, i decided to watch your cabin build since i hadnt seen them all and in this video you mention letting the game rest before cooking so its more tender. We try to hang our moose and deer up to 10 days (depending on the weather) but how long would you hang goose. I am hoping my hubby can get out this year goose hunting now that we have retired. Thanks. i love your videos

I would consider getting a tractor if you re planning to build a few Cabins. you can use the Tractor as a Lumber Mill and to haul logs. think about it. find an old Massey Ferguson real cheap. they re out there. it s what I would do. because I dont believe in un-necessary work. because it s kind of Masochistic. Settlers did it that way but they also died at age 46. lol

My grandparents raised geese long ago and all of Grandma's blankets and pillows were filled with goose down. The attic in the garage always had cotton bags full of goose feathers hanging from the rafters that she aged for almost a year in order to lose most of the goosey smell. They always kept a faint natural scent but that's what made them Grandma pillows!

Trouble with Geese is they trust me. I go sit on a Park bench and before I know it, I m surrounded by Canada geese or Ducks. what are options for Vegans. what kind of roots will sustain Ye? Is there some type of forest salad, what mushrooms are safe and which are hallucinogenic? .lol. .Well, if he s using Montreal Ingredients, he must be Ok. lol
