Using primitive skills to mix clay, sand, wood ashes from the fireplace, moss and grass to make a mortar to fill in the gaps between the logs, I spend three days weatherproofing the cabin against the strong cold winds of winter in Canada. This is very primitive technology and could be used to build an entire cabin with support from wattle and daub, a lattice pattern of small sticks. I will be incorporating more primitive technology into the other buildings on the property where I will build with stone, clay and wood to make a root cellar, cheese cave, bath house (sauna and shower, wood shed, workshop, maple syrup shack and more. I have found a source of free pallet wood and scrap wood within about 40 kilometres of the land that the cabin is on, so I may start gathering that when I'm in town so that I can build a small pallet wood cabin or shed to store wood and tools near the road. I have a shallow drilled well near the road where I park my truck, so I plan on building a wood shanty around the pump to keep it protected and so that it doesn't freeze as deeply in the winter. Basically it will be a pumphouse with storage room. It is so cold outside that the rivers are freezing even where the current is strongest, and the shallow slow moving creek behind the cabin re-freezes after a few days of unseasonably warm weather. At night, I continue working inside the cabin by headlight, and since I'm off grid, I light the tiny house with lanterns and candles. The hot fire in the wood stove keeps the cabin at a comfortable 20 degrees Celsius, even during the coldest nights. For dinner, I make sourdough pizza dough and cook it on a cast iron frying pan on top of the stove. My wife made the whole-wheat sourdough bread and dough and the mozzarella cheese she made from raw milk using traditional methods

Hey Shawn, I really enjoyed this video. What some may think tedious, I found relaxing and informing. You have a quiet and unassuming way about your presentation or in the way you edit your video. Your perspective towards insight with today's issues, problems or whatever other name some politically correct person has to have it called, should make people want to go deeper within the confines of one's self for evaluation of how to be a better them. myself included, which it has. so thank you.

Next time I recommend the usage of a brickies Fummelkelle to be faster and relaxed closing the gaps with mortar. Did you notice that gap below you little hanging handsaw in your wall while cutting this video? In earlier videos you could spot a truckload of gaps like this. I mean time is longtime up by now but just as a little review tool or to make thinks easier in future.

Hey buddy, long time viewer and Facebook friend here. just wanted to comment how much more I enjoy watching even these older videos than the new stuff you never say a word for 30+ minutes. IMHO. not good. (I know all about the other page you talk. too much. Keep it simple) Kevin Clark from Upstate NY.

I went back & saw how things were done by observation & experience. best professional practice is not as good as best professional experience. The first is book learning the second is wisdom. I like your wisdom from experience. Every picture of nature you give us is imbued with that wisdom.

I liked your My self Reflection today. I have fifteen different projects half done done at any given time due to the plague of needing instant gratification. Mainly I have a short short poorly developed disciplined motivation skill. They tend to get done but I get plagued with doubt.

Hello Shawn! I have discovered about six years ago that there are two different kind of salts! One from sea and another from mining! Sea salt are alot less salter! It is important always to read the nutrition information on the products before purchasing!

One thought. burning wood produces soot and smoke, so it's not very clean heat in the long run. I think solar is a good idea for a lot of reasons. Would produce cleaner heat for one thing. Then wood for the cloudy days only. And hot water for showers.

Im never bored. I know how to keep myself busy gardening and growing my herbs and lemon trees from seeds and watching the miracle of growth! I loved reading, and walking, and sewing, cooking etc. Too many things to do which keep me busy.

I stopped drinking milk when I was teenager because I was always nasally congested. And since then have been drinking home made almond milk. Also cut out out all dairy cheese and meat. No longer suffer from arthritis and eczema.

You're busting your ass every day. it's cold
Eat what ever you think you need and can get
you're living a life we. most of us couldn't handle
You go mate, And that was a very thoughtful message at the end, I agree
