Thanks for sharing James. I enjoy watching your videos, also because you remind me of one good friend who is also very smart & succesful in business. His apperance is not only very similar to your, but also the way he communicates and speaks, its just unbelievable.
Now I am going to throw some ideas questions. You mentioned that the goal of building is pretty much over and that its mostly maintenance, hunting you do and so on. But what about maintaining the goal which is Self Reliance, Scaling up, and maybe kicking-of a community there that would be able to survive Or maybe writing a book the subject of self reliance, and the future, etc. How good are you in agriculture Do you know something about vertical farming
Here is one that is attracting my attention, and maybe yours as well: would you be interested to experiment/learn about this subject: Dutch vertical farming, produce twice as much food using half as many resources. . You have large lands and space: ) so.
Probably something we might increasingly need in the future.
Anyways, its always nice to see you and your wood work is at a very high craftsman level: ) take care.

Shawn, I have two brothers one older one younger and when we were kids they were into football rugby cricket etc, not me I was off to the woods or the farms learning about the flora and fauna, making camps tree houses, fishing, hunting and cooking over an open fire. My brothers thought I was crazy. Yet now in older life I own a few acres of woodland where I have a small cabin and my brothers come over and love to learn about the countryside, the birds and the trees and natural healing plants. My best friends live in that wood. I think I was born an old man too and am very grateful for it. It is where I find my peace with the world and always have. Like you I am blessed. Thank you.

I’m 65, retired, and enjoying my life. Worked all my life since I was 14. Everyday is a Saturday for me. I get to spend everyday with the love of my life. I repair things around my my house when needed, enjoy nature, gardening, canvas painting, photography. I love to tinker and enjoy that too. So nice to be out of the rat race and having the simple life. For the first time in my life, I do not worry about what is happening in the world nor what is going on in the states. I just live the time I have left in this world for me and my family. That is what counts the most.

You are no longer an old minded man. But a wise man! ( I am 71 years old and invalid since I am 18 years old. and I know for sure that you reached wiseness sooner than many humans living in the West ). Just to understand my comment: I graduated from the best Business School in the world as far as Marketing is concerned (easy to guess which! and I finished 3rd. I worked in Manhattan. and so on. Up to the time when my body could not work as much because of a terrible decease. Nothing is more important than true life in accordance with true values )

I am 72 and finally retired after 60 years of working. Started baby sitting at age 12. I have retired from 5 jobs and resigned from one. I owe nothing to anyone financially. I have the average monthly bills. I get up when I want to and am now spending most of my time wood turning, which I love to do. I can sympathize with you Shawn. I do not have the urge to travel though. I did enough of that when I was younger. I have no regrets. There is nothing better than making something with your own two hands. Take care and stay safe.

I wish people who understand life would love to go back in time and create what he has worked hard to build. I don't think this time and age will allow it that easily. Land prices have skyrocketed, including the first things we need to develop such a lifestyle. I have slowly amassed my hands, power tools, and other necessary things. I cannot find affordable land in a decent area. Having followed Shawn for the last 5 or maybe 6 years, I could not have found better inspiration and, in a way, a mentor.

Hey 'old' bud. It is the how to that many of your younger followers will need you one more round - show them how to prepare to live that life you have strived so hard to create. Congratulations on making it. Now forward - the next step is your day-to-day living - just live it- record it. YOu would be amazed at just how many people get lost in the how to's of life period. Looking forward to enjoying your successes with you. Blessings, have a great day and life. Stay cool.

Hi Shawn. I have been following you for several years now and feel as if I know you even though you have no idea of who I am. I have been inspired by you to build a pavilion in my back yard to hang my swing. I enjoy sitting outside with golden retriever Alice everyday possible. I have noticed a slowing of your content and always knew this happen. So I figured this is my time to say thank you for sharing your wisdom, knowledge and inspiration with me. Dan from Toledo.

I can definitely identify with your feelings. Basically it sounds to me like you have retired. I mean this only in terms of frame of mind. You're at the point that you don't have to do something. You have flexibility. In my case, I've got 21 years on you. I still have my interests in building muzzleloaders for example. Recently I've become interested in cap and ball revolvers and self bows. Not working for a living has given me more time to pursue interests, new and old.

I watched you build a beautiful log cabin in the woods, with an awesome outdoor kitchen, and then start over and build what I consider to be the ultimate log cabin homestead. Post videos at whatever pace works for you, you deserve your time free of thinking of making content all the time. Actually, you've kept up a remarkable pace for a lot of years now, and I've appreciated and enjoyed the chance to watch you work your plans into fruition, it's been inspiring.

Hi Shawn, Maybe for the Archery Shop you could add a wedge shaped wood frame and pillow style baffle to allow some slow ingress of outside air thru pivoting window(s) so maybe a summer one that is mosquito netting for excluding bugs and a winter one that allows air in through some blanket fabric or padded breathable materials to slow it down and regulate airflow. shutters perhaps or adjustable vents like stove has More projects o keep you busy!

I was born an old man too! My parents were elderly when I was born, dad 58, and mom 12 years younger! We lived on a very rural dairy farm with lots of woods, lakes, and swamps! I love hunting fishing, camping, gardening, building, and fixing things! I'm busier now than I was when I was working on the job or farm! I'm 72 and work circles around my sons in laws! If I wouldn't have screwed up my shoulder I'd still be working on the job!

Since you seem to be in a self reflective mood, I was wondering if you would comment on something I've thought about. I have been watching you for many years now and I often think of the comparisons between you and Dick Proenneke. He lived in Alaska into his seventies and was able to keep doing what he loved. What are your plans for My Self Reliance and your lifestyle when you're in your seventies, and beyond

Hey Shawn. Your words born old resonate w me only now I AM old. Ive always preferred the quiet forests and serene lakes where I live. Im raising my grandkids to identify the native plants and animals in our woods as we daily walk the land. Now that we have fresh snow they can clearly see whats out there and are excited to identify the animals we share space with. Thanks for sharing your time with us on YT.

Hello Shawn, I hope that you stay with us for a long time and that you continue to let us share in your life. I'm always happy to see new videos from you and it would be a shame if you stopped. You are the only one I can say that the man deserves what he has created. I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving and wish you and your family a nice pre-Christmas period. Best wishes from Germany - Walter

Your calmness coming back may be simply explained as you finally are doing / living the life you are meant to live. LIVE the LIFE you have IMAGINED (H. D. H. If you create the video; no matter the content, I will watch it. As long it is about the life you are meant to live. Make video of the city and I won’t watch. Like you I enjoy the same life style therefore your video content.

Now that is a beautiful looking strop! I'd really like one just like that. The thing that I appreciate when watching you work is how you always take the time to do things right. There are no corners cut, and no compromises made. The beauty in that is that it creates the perfect teaching/learning moment, and I always appreciate learning from the masters of their craft.

The American playwriter Tennessee Williams said it best: [quote]. life has to be allowed to continue even after the dream of life is - all over. As someone born in 1970 like you, just now I found myself in a place to finally understand what he had in mind when he wrote it. Life doesn't have a meaning by itself. It's what we make of it. Be it carving wood.

Sometimes it's the simple and small things that are going on that are the most enjoyable. With all your hard work the past two years, you deserve to enjoy the slower pace of this time of year. Always things to do, but even farmers work hard all spring and summer, preserve the bounty and chill a little more in winter. Happy, free life.

My mom died last year. She was 67. I spend the last year with her, she watched videos of travels to countries with nature she might never see, a livestream of animals in the desert, but she was so happy whenever you uploaded and had to show me. I think her deepest wish was to have gone back in time and created what you did.
