Making a Rustic Maple Mirror for my Off Grid Log Cabin

I make a mirror for the bathroom in my off grid log cabin using maple that I cut down and milled off my property a few years ago. I harvest a deer and cut off and cook a steak on my woodstove while I'm butchering and preparing the venison for the freezer. At the end of the video, I check my trail cameras behind the cabin moments after a bull moose rubs a tree down to bare wood while a cow moose protests as her bull calf looks on. Log Cabin Building, Bushcraft, Survival Skills, Cooking, Canadian Wilderness, Off Grid Living, Homesteading Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me. Thanks for the opportunity to see all the skills involved in a cabin build. nothing I'd ever be able to experience otherwise. This gives me some understanding about relatives of my mother's mother who built their new house the year before I was born, on the side of a mountain in NH. I was able to visit in my 20's (in the 1970's) and saw the central fireplace which opened onto the kitchen on one side and the living room on the other. and heated the entire house. I had some of the sweetest water I've ever tasted from their hand-pump spilling into the kitchen sink. He died (of old age) a few years later, and she moved down the mountain. We wrote back and forth for the few years left to her. Thank you for giving me understanding of what they had to do to build that home.

I have 50 acres property west of Hwy 62 and built a camp (24x26) had to also built the 600 meters driveway 3 hours north of Newmarket, i know how much snow we got in the last week or so. I was a bus driver for the Ttc for 32 years, i am more afraid at 3: 00 am in Toronto than in the woods at the same time, i have seen enough people in my life so i understand the hunting and All that comes with no hydro, water and being in the woods at 4: 00 pm or 7: 00 am listening to a chipmunk 50 yards away, beats the city! I hope you also make your grievances to our government about their gun laws.

Shawn I just watched this video and a couple days ago watched as you were talking about sharpening tools and knives.
As a former carpenter I know the importance of sharpening tools and knives!
I made jigs and fixtures for all my stones, steels, ceramic rods and straups. Everything is at a 22 degree angle.
Let me know if you are interested and I can get you some pictures of what I have done.
Enjoy the weekend.
We are in the middle of an ice storm here in NE Iowa.

Wouldn't it be cool if you had a Grocery Store/ Restaurant nearby within walking distance so you wouldn't always have to make your own complex meals and also get access to a vast amount of food products from many parts of the world there And it had like a snow mobile/ A. T. V. Drive Thru or something. Just go to a window and get your food sometimes. The good life. Haha. Enjoy your Holidays Shawn. Rough times.

Like the mirror frame, nice touch to the bathroom copper sink and nice wood countertop. Ypur wife is so lucky with nice wood furniture you make and cabin.
My husband likes your knives and work shop. In the spring do you have plans to finished completing your outdoor kitchen and add a new addition to yours and wife cabin the master bedroom and make wooden furniture head board That. Would be so nice.

You're still missing a hot tub and sauna over there. I can imagine all kinds of cool ideas building a structure for those cranking up logs cut into 6 x 6s or something and cranked up by your winch making a bunch of vertical posts to fasten walls to and have like a canopy manger gazebo with a hot tub under it heated by firewood and an enclosed sauna beside it.

Did you ever see my comment about making removable screens and windows for the outdoor kitchen. You number them so they go right back into the same spot. In the spring put up screens and the fall glass. My grandparent had a screened in front porch like that. Don't make them too big.

Nice mirror, now Cali will want one of her own at floor levels! Curious that the Moose all prefer that one tree to rub against, is it the tree species, or that it's smoother than the dominant pines They were quite vocal, as if putting on a show for everyone! he he

Considering that snow load, I'd make a ramp so the Sno-mobile could be driven up and stowed in the outdoor kitchen. The kitchen isn't really usable during most of Sno-mobile season, so make it a 'car port' and you won't have to excavate your ride when you need it.

Hello Shawn, you've built some amazing things! And even when you got knocked down, you got right back up and started over. Great resilience! Have you ever thought about coming over to X I bet you'd find some like-minded people there. Thank you, my friend.

Looks like you could use a leg vice on your workbench. I was lucky enough to get possession of one that was on my father's bench that I believe was his father's. Makes a huge difference when trying to plane a long board. Whoops -- I see one later.

Rustic in elegant way. I have watched you for years and to see your advancement never disappoints.
I moved off grid 7 months ago after retiring and it has been a struggle but made it through winter so far

Just can't beat a fresh deer steak. Well, maybe some lovely oven venison stew. Lovely touch to the bathroom. Cozy and comfortable laid back living. Worth the extra work with the outdoors to boot, to enjoy.

Shawn, what is going on with the Moose at the end of this video.
Do his anters hurt or itch him He sounds like he is in pain and trying to rub them off
Fascinating video.
Oh and very beautiful mirror

Shawn, when do you think you will be starting on the downstairs bedroom I believe you said you would build it in the living room bathrooms are.
Merry Christmas to you and your family Shawn!

How much would Shawn freak out if the moose looked at the camera, shape-shifted back into a creepy looking bald, naked dude and just waved at the camera and took off running
reply

That moose is chucking out some heat, going on the temps. Lovely mirror, I just think it needs something extra, like inset LEDs powered by two AA batteries Just kidding.

Wrong! It’s Shawn that’s the lucky one to have found a wife so supportive of his chosen lifestyle! It’s the least he can do is provide some creature comforts!

Sitting with the dog by the stove in your cabin with a book.
One of the top ten most beautiful things I've seen this year! A wonderful gift. Ty.
Merry Christmas!
