My wife and I install lights in the outdoor kitchen and move furniture in the log cabin in preparation to move into the new bedroom addition. I finish installing the wall panelling and the ceiling and install half of the wood floor. Log Cabin Building, Bushcraft, Survival Skills, Cooking, Canadian Wilderness, Off Grid Living, Homesteading Hi, I'm Shawn James. I am a passionate outdoorsman living the life of my dreams in a log cabin that I built by myself in the Canadian wilderness. Join me and my golden retriever, Cali and listen to the sounds of the forest in this relaxing wilderness setting. I prefer to keep my talking to a minimum and let the natural sounds of nature make you feel as though you are there with me. Looking good man. Ive come to the realization that i need to quit my day job or my dreams will remain just that. Its so time consuming for us to drive up to our place in the boreal. Takes us 2 days to unpack and get settled. Then its giver time. Then we are already feeling depressed because we know we will be packing to leave in a couple days. Slooooow progress. Every trip into town in $709-$899. How did you get your self mentally prepared to pull the pin on the rat race and leave it all behind and take that leap! Ive been subbed since the start of your 1st little cabin(actually your 2nd in life) as your 1st was not video documented. Anyways. Plz let me know. This is a big one for me. To just pull the pin on our business and go. Its 110% what we both want

Flying Squirrel Removal: Back in the 80's when I moved in to My Cabin in the Appalachians of CT, I had a Family living in the Vaulted Ceiling, I found where they were Coming in and then Started a Fire in the Wood Stove, I shut all the Windows and Doors and then the Damper on the Stove, I opened the door on the stove and Smoked the Cabin as I stood outside with a 22 semi-auto 18 shot, and Offed them as they came out, now I thought I had them all out, But No, One was left and a Friend came and spent the night on the couch, He was awoken by Me Shooting at the last Flying Squirrel at about 2am, got the Little intruder, My Friend was just back from Grenada, He was under the Coffee table Screaming. CHECK FIRE. Oh My. Good Luck!

Years ago when I saw you moving logs with pulleys attached to the trees. I absolutely loved your ability to get things done even though you were by yourself.
I went to my backyard and I put a huge picnic table on a metal umbrella stand and I was able to turn it I could paint the underside and the top side and I could turn it with the Sun as it dried.
Everything was smooth as far as doing something I would normally never have thought to do by myself.
I also refinished some furniture and painted it and it looks fantastic and I've enjoyed it ever since. And I got some house chores done it just lit a fire under me and I felt so alive and good and I appreciate everything you've done.

The To-List only flow to one direction growth. Take care of the squirrel situation before he finds and chews-up your electrical wires. HardCloth, Course Steel Wool help block entry points for the mice. You may try to make yourself complete one project in order to reward yourself with starting a new one. If you allow too much ( To-Do’s ) to build up incomplete the stress of it will / could stop you in your tracks completely. Yet, here’s a longer term goal / reward task consider closing in the upper open gable area at the front og the cabin to reduce sun / weather-wear you say you’re experiencing.

We gave up buying commercial dog food. We make chicken or beef with pumpkin, blueberries and carrots as a base for their food. A week’s supply is cooked at a time. We found it is no more expensive than buying decent canned dog food. What they eat depends what’s on sale. If hamburger is on sale we buy 15 lbs of it and store it in the freezer. The same with turkey or chicken. We add hearts and liver once a month. They are happy healthy dogs. Our cat lived to be 22 years old and the dog 17 years.

Shawn, the rooms are always well lit and cosy. It’s been a long while since you’ve covered anything to do with your current electrical off grid system (I recall the large freezer. If you’ve ever the time (no joke intended) I’d love to see/learn how you’ve set yourself up as I don’t see loads of solar panels attached to your property.
Superb stuff. Thoroughly enjoy watching since the beginning. It’s a real novelty for someone living in suburban UK.

We eat Venison, Pork, fish, chicken, but no beef. Not healthy these days, especially with S. American Screw worm almost to the Texas border. Too pricey for most down our way. The most favorite of mine is Walleye or a fresh grilled Pork Chop. Nope, not gonna give up my homemade w. w. bread. Love to fish, garden, cook and Bake. Too old to change my habits at this stage of Life. Cali gives us all a smile. Your cabin is truly you Shawn. Live long and be Happy.

I've been watching for years. As you built your previous property and now, all of this. It's 4; 30 in the morning out. Fall is beginning to really come on. leaves are turning and there's a crispness in the air. This morning, lightning, thunder and rain accompany the dawning. Cali is chasing her toys, your progress is as promised. All is right with the world.

Hi Shawn and family, it’s really becoming a cozy room. I feel it’s not unusual to put off the finishing touches on a project. In fact, it can be irritating. But persevere and know once the job is done, you can call it finished. Especially when the wildlife want to share your space with you. I know you both will enjoy this bedroom once it’s completed.

Everyone’s dream. Absolutely breathtaking.
And I have to laugh about your ankle. Most folks these days woukd have spent hours in emerg. then lay ed around with their ankle wrapped and resting on a pillow. Yoy show that mind over matter is powerful. Of course if it was more badly broken, sure, you would have had to do things a bit differently.

Glad you have black cherry trees on property. I have only a few left. They keep dropping large branches because of their weight. Such great wood for many things.
Cabin looking better and better every video. Those little projects add fast don't they Know all about that. Need to finish several of mine.
Stay safe, warm, and busy!

I'd love a battery of photographs from different angles that would allow me to piece together the floorplans. I get confused about where everything is. I have a general idea but often find myself wondering where in the cabin, or where on the property is he right now Not a complaint. I wouldn't change a thing about the videos.

This has been a pleasure to watch. I still think about the cabin you left behind. I often wonder how it might have changed, since you left it. My dream is to build my retirement cabin in that form. I feel like you hardly were able to enjoy it. Thanks and keep it up. This has been good for you.

Try a bee smoker or a piece of smoldering kindling on a pole to smoke out Rocky the Squirrel
My dad used to refurb houses. He taught me to be a finish carpenter, I love doing all that little finishing stuff.
Better get that mattress inside! Critters will end up with nice comfy homes!

Love your content so much. One day hope to help you do almost anything in your property. Just to say thinks for all of the amazing content over the years. I was curious about the wall structure is there a purpose for the concrete in between or just aesthetics

There cant be a more stunning beautiful cabin, chicken coop, land, all that you have built anywhere! I wonder what the Lord may have you build for fun one day, when heaven calls us home. It takes my breath away! Thank you Shawn for always sharing!

I’ve been following you for years and you have changed from self reliance to more off grid or out doors. I miss the garden and food storage. The store bought meats just don’t seem to have the same draw as the old cooking you use to do.

I love everything you’ve done to your home. Looks amazing. I hope you could take a break and go do some fly fishing and hunting. This the season to enjoy what you have done so well. Plus Cali needs tome one on one with you as well.

After watching your videos for years I think I enjoy the scenery in autumn the most. It’s funny how the trees are their most beautiful when this seasons growth is in the process of dying. I love any season with Cali in it!
