My New Camera! - Sony FDR-AX53 4k vs. Canon ELPH 340 HS

So I made a deal with myself that if I continued to make videos after a year, I would treat myself to a new camera. A little early on that promise, but this coincides with the temperate outdoor season. I enjoy making videos, spending time outside, and even editing the videos together, so it makes sense to treat myself to the proper tools! I'm still working out the bugs here so bear with me over the next few videos as I learn to work with the new camera - it's strength and weaknesses! I upgraded to a Sony FDR-AX53 4k: I also got a Rode Video Mic Pro I used to shoot on a Canon Elph 340HS: This camera was inexpensive and I really put it through it's paces. It performed well for the cost

I bought this camera AX53 and am not impressed with the documentation nor its capability. It is overhyped and requires you to purchase other accessories to make it as functional as I was expecting. One of the most annoying -features- is that it has to go through an entire turn off and turn on sequence with any change you make. How 1980's is that! The card that comes with the KIT cannot shoot 4K. I've also looked at the still images - crap - my Galaxy s% and s& shoot rings around that camera Even the Galaxy video seems superior to this camera. You also cannot listen to the sounds it is recording. Overproced toy in my opinion.

I bought the Sony a few days ago, probably a bit late to the party! I think it-s a great camera, but one thing I-ve found annoying. You can-t remove that cover over the mic hot shoe. I like to leave my mic permanently attached, and it fits into my camera case nicely, but that cover can-t be removed like on my old JVC Everio. I don-t want to break it off because of warranty, though someone did on another review. Otherwise pretty happy with it so far.

Not everyone knows this, but watching 4k on a 1080 display (on YouTube) still results in a significant quality bump! The way that YouTube degrades quality makes it better to watch 4k on a 1080 display. If you were comparing the quality out of camera, you may not see a difference, but on YouTube, it's different.

20 minutes of video and that is it? Wow. no sort of battery grip to compacts so you can have a huge bulky battery? Sure it would not be very compact anymore but. I am curious about the Sony, the audio seemed to be distorted from time to time in this video: /. Good video and awesome beard: )

Looking good! I got an AX33 a year or so ago. I use a Canon 70D DSLR for stills and video when possible but when you're out in the wild and moving around the Sonys a whole lot easier to deal with. I use the Rhode Pro as well. Great mic.

That's pretty good video but no sharper than the video I get with 1080p on my Canon G7x. But a camcorder like the Sony gives you a smoother shot due to supreme stabilization

It's been over one year now.
Any chance of doing a follow-up review on both cameras? Any issues with the Sony? BTW the Canon was quite good in the comparison.

a sony and 4k is great combination. Though you're probably mostly going to use 1080p for youtube, 4K is good if you want to make your video extra special.
