A large reason people lose so much weight is this obsession over hunting and trapping. I see it now even in the comments, it was called hunting and GATHERING for a reason, majority of your food stuffs would consist of plants and fibrous material during the warm months while you set traps and hunted when you could. Protein is a excellent source of the calorific energy one needs to survive, but understanding the plants around you is essential. When the weather gets colder and both prey move on and plants wilt you would relocate with those food sources(Staying in one spot is also not viable there is a reason most tribes were nomadic. No one should expect to -Thrive- either, there is a reason life expectancy was low in those times, but it is what the human body plan is made to do, it is more than possible. With ten items defiantly not, sometimes even twenty wont do the job (which why I prefer versatile tools personally) I maintain one does not need excessive amounts of modern tools but, stone axes knives etc arent very logical since many tribes also knew how to smelt ores ( though you should know how to make one if the event calls for it, you lose your axe etc) I also maintain it is very possible to live off the land given that a person were to keep these ideas in mind, another thing is being by yourself. This one is the biggest delusions I have seen in my fellow man that it is viable to be alone, everything by yourself becomes three times as hard, hunting is harder, you can set less traps, gather less food, take more time to build shelters, and you better hope you don't get hurt because then you are your only friend. and in a survival situation what good is a friend with a broken leg or infection. I cant wait to get in on the wilderness survival community, but personally I have much I want to learn first before I call myself ready to hold discussions on more niche topics, like flint napping, trapping etc.

Interesting vid man, i dont understand though only 200yrs ago where i sit the tribes like wampanoag and narragansett lived with stone technology, and even as recent as 1911 the last stone tools wild native was discovered in california, Ishi. I do however understand in some areas the wild animal and plant populations are severely hindered but out west in vancouver island the salmon run thick i watched them literally shoulder to shoulder untold thousands in a river easily picked a fish out by hand, a net or weir or basket would of supplied 500 fish in a day 100% so the locales are out there especially out west the last place the britians got too on the continent. Unfortunately their methods were atrocious with deforestation, genocide of natives, exterminating many animal species; basically eradicate everything before them, then the britians simply changed their name on a piece of paper over here and continued as americans. Imagine? wake up british that day go to bed american, pretty weird.
Anyways interesting video and i like the bravado but dont understand how the concept works with facts of reality with recent stone age american tribes and ishi etc.
If your strictly talking 10 primitive items or naked into the wild etc then i completely agree thats complete fantasy land man, natives had tons of tools, many specialized for a single task and no other, they had multi item kits like their snowshoe making kit, canoe making kit, bow making kit, basket making kit, flint knapping kit, net making kit, fire making kit, acorn processing kit, summer fishing kit, winter fishing kit on and on and on. Appears SOME dont understand this with their number of items kits which im absolutely not in agreement with as it completely contradicts history and is simply not based on facts.
Be well man,

you had the chance to take a 2 gallon METAL bear canister, instead of a 2 qt pot. Make it yourself, it aint that much metal or welding. Then you can have a haftable lid, you see. So you can skip the axe-pick (it's little needed anyway and a real saftety threat) and you can carry/boil 4x ast much water. You also had the chance to take 4000 ft of paracord, in the form of hammock and gilnet, so as to unravel it and then get the 30, 000 ft of single strands, which can be woven into 1500 sq ft of 2- mesh netting, forming several big fish traps, ( via lashed saplings) with big -v's- of net -wings to guide fish into the baited traps. they dont need to be far out, they dont need to be in deep water, and you dont need to service them more than once every day, They dont need to be placed far apart. So they can be attached to each other and the end one can be attached to something solid on shore. With your baited floating sets all around the traps, and lots of fish guts in the trap, 1- mesh for the sides and top of the trap, 1/2- mesh on the bottom, there'll be crabs, small fish trapped in there, which will bait in more, larger fish You can have some of the nets productive in the first week, and in 3 weeks, have all the fish traps working. Bringing in 20 lbs of fish per day, on average. Eat 4 lbs of fish per day, and dry/smoke 8 lbs. leaving 8 lbs of heads and guts for fish traps, floating-hook sets and dryland sets for animals. Use chunks of the 20x20, the duct tape, and the cordage to make a pontoon raft, with outriggers and a kayak paddle. So, half a day dealing with the traps and the catch, half a day harvesting 6 lbs of cambium, 2 lbs of which you eat every day, cause you need the carbs and fish have no carbs. You wont be losing any body weight until the big snow/freeze, which assures you the win.

Awesome commentary, thanks for sharing. The challenge of providing enougth food for oneself is surely being underestimated by modern men, specially in europe and the americas. Like you said, that job is a tall order indeed. And we often forget that history shows us that even with all our modern techniques, tools, knowledge and etc, it actually takes only a VERY SMALL handicap to throw people right into starvation. Despite international support, many countries in Africa still face huge famines even as of today due to simple scarcity of water. Also, we had a huge famine that cause millions of deaths as recent as 1932-1933 in the URSS, which was basically caused by political changes. North Korea can also be cited as having a rampant famine crisis right now despite it's recently acquired technology to craft atomic bombs. And this all comes to a huge contrast with some studies that show obesity in aboriginal tribes to be ammounting to almost 1/3 of the population. A similar pattern of obesity has also been found in some other indigenous tribes, including some of the north and south americas. IMHO, this contradiction basically shows that there is no real place for hadicaps when it comes to long term survival and thriving. And we should really be glad of political stability, technology, commerce and the resource-rich territories we got to live in, all of these together. On light of that, i would say that a modern man trying to live off the land alone should really just choose a VERY good location and use whatever is in his reach to get a nice and round pot belly, because this task is simply no joke and living alone is a big enougth handicap already. Thanks again.

chunks of the tarp (and tape) swiftly form watertight containers, which can be used to dry out (and keep dry) debris, for use as tinder, or as insulation to stuff between layers of clothing. I'd line a seep well with one of the wool shirts, and make a BiG water filter, 1 ft OD, and 4 ft long, full of layers of gravel, moss, sand, charcoal, with a t-shirt over the bottom. Then I'd not have to boil water any more. All you need (or should want) is a small, low sleeping shelter. A 10x10 hunk of the 20x20 will suffice. Notch a tree for the small end of your 9 ft long, 3-4- sapling. 3. 5 ft high. the other end is 2. 5 ft high. Have the big end of the sapling in a tripod of staked down poles. No more size or weight, cause it's dangerous over you in a storm! You only want room for your raised bed, your body, your gear and your insulalative materials. Until you get the raised bed, you'll need a Siberian fire lay -aiming- heat into the head end of your shelter, but once you have the bed, you can put big, flat, heated rocks under you for warmth. The -camera tarp- can be hung over some 7 ft high poles that are anchored to poles in front of the head end of your sleeping shelter. The 10x10 chunk of your big tarp is laid on the ridgepole in the diamond layout, and the diamond ends are cut toward the centerline, until you have flaps that will seal out wind and raid. Fill any gaps with sod, branches, debris or tape. Have toggles so you can ease out of either end of your shelter, field made bow and arrow in hand. Small bags of cambium and dried fish make exellent bait and this is an ideal way to get a shot at less than 5m.

I just binge watched the last 4 episodes and did a quick video of it. Reviewing my 3-hour analysis I made 2 months ago of who the winner could be in season 3 for the show, I predicted the women would do well, and that Zach Fowler would do well, but would tap out due to wanting to return to his wife and two kids. However, that turned out to be more of a motivating factor now for the last two seasons, at least for the men, so I'll have to re-assess for Season 4. Also, Callie could have won it, and the same with Megan. I also thought Carleigh was cheated, being under. 2 BMI of 17. They could have given her daily checks. Had they focused on catching rainbow trout more, it would have been easy to last, as you saw with how Callie and Megan were doing. a 79 gram fillet of rainbow trout nets 111 calories and 4. 9 grams of fat. A lake the size of Lake Escondido probably has a couple hundred thousand rainbow trout, if not at least a million, and the size of the trout they were catching were in the 2-3 pound range, so a fillet would be at least twice the 79 gram fillet, so about 20 grams of fat and 444 calories from just one fish. Eating 4 rainbow trout a day would allow them to thrive. A good trout fisherman could catch that limit in an hour or two. On a good day, yielding 20 or 30 of them to smoke to save for later, and focusing on building and gardening, a year wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.

it's the lack of food that's making all this so horrible. You needed to get the hell off of that seacoast, once it turned cold, Those tides, winds, and currents restrict your access to the water so badly, especially without a stable craft that you might as well just go back inland (as far as alllowd) on a stream some place, for most of your day. The crustaceans just aint worth the crap that goes with a winter sea shore. You know that if you can go 60 days without losing a lb, and half 100 lbs of fish and cambium preserved, you''ll win, barring accident or illness. You'll be 90 days in before you feel the hunger/depression/clouded mind state/lack of sleep/exhaustion that the others have been feeling all along! :-) So you'll have a such a huge advantage that it will be insurmountable. Pull in most, if not all of your fish traps and float sets, cause storms will probably just steal them from you anyway. Make some skis/snowshoes, so you can make box-net traps for rabbits, and still be able to get some cambium. The fish traps and cambium harvesting, for 6 weeks, can feed you well and give you that 100 lb edge and will show everyone that you DO know how to best take advantage of your resources.

Hi ya WB! Men and their toys - I-d have fun with it to, Lol! It was hard to survive then, tons harder now, some say in their area they have an abundance of wildlife, others don-t, I feel it-s a good thing that there are laws on and seasons for hunting with limits to how many one can poses. I look back from childhood to now (at 57) and the growth of human population, cities/towns exploding, while the land for wildlife shrinks. In x I feel the majority (maybe all) of the world will be laid with concrete and the only wildlife seen will be n zoo-s, I might get a lot of flak for this, don-t care, I think it-s x a limit is put on how many children a man an woman can have, (a woman can only give birth once a yr, think about how many seeds a man can plant) look at all the children n homes. If we curb human population maybe animal population will grow. A movie came to mind -soil and green- ever seen it? Could that be the future food source, who knows what the future holds. For give me if I-m off track per the video. Thank u

it doesnt' take all that big a garden to feed you, if you also take wild plants, use traps for critters and fish, and keep a silenced autorifle at hand as they do their chores. about 30 ft square of corn, squash, pumpkin potatoes, beans, tomatoes, lettuce, peas, per adult. Fish netting will suffice for fencing out small critters, if you do it right. Construct your net fence as a butterfly shape, guiding the critter to the -v-, where there's a nice hole in the netting, at ground height, with lots of steel traps buried all around, inside and outside of the netting. Ditto, the there should be a -forest- of tall stakes along the netting everywhere but at those -v- apexes, and right where the deer can land, either some buried jungle whips, ready to bury a -cage- of stakes in the bottom of the deer's chest, or up on short forked sticks, a lot of steel cable snares, tied to a drag log, with a cowbell attached. If you hear the bell, get out there with your rifle, before the thrashing wrecks your garden!

with modern gear and knowledge, we dont need nearly the bulk and weight of stuff that the tribes were restricted-to. A silenced carbon fiber M4, for instance with luminous sights, scope, in see-thru mount, NVD goggles, solar charger, and a Ciener. 22lr conversion unit, for instance, 10 lb total, 30 rds of 60 gr 223 and 150 rds of 60 gr Aquila subsonic. 22 ammo, will feed you for years, if you know what to do with it, and it all conceals in your pack. 4x the effective range of the bow (even in daylight) and 10x at night. That subsonic 22 rd will brain deer to 50m. The 223 softpoints will do the same to elk, bear or moose to 100m, and will cleanly take pronghorn, hogs, deer to 200m with chest hits. Out there, it still has the same power (600 ft lbs) that a 6- 357 has at 10m) So you just have to be rifleman enough to get the good hits.
