Yes. you could eat it: IMO is Crescentia Cujete and is used more often as a medicinal plant in addition to the utility of the gourd shell. The primary effect of this fruit is as a potent laxative, the rest of the plant has other medicinal uses and is part of the lore in the DR.

Love it! I am from a small town called Cabrera in the northeast coast of the Dominican Republic. My grandfather had one of these trees and me and my siblings and cousins climbed on it all the time. They used the higuero gourd to make drinking cups and containers to wash the food.
