The same amount of gas in the fish's swim bladder occupies less space deep underwater due to the tremendous pressure of the water column above the fish. As the fish surfaces, the gas in it's swim bladder expands as the water pressure decreases. The deeper the fish comes from, the more it expands. Down deep, the gas in the swim bladder is pushing back against the pressure of the water above it, so the fish doesn't implode, lol.

Great action video Darcy. Even though you did not hook any pelagic fish the local bottom fishing looked like it was very productive. I have many Avet reels. You called them Maxcell reels. Are these the same thing? When my Avet reels are working well they are awesome. They do need at least yearly service and sometimes twice a year. Thanks for posting.

I feel like severe swim bladder expansion from fishing deep in the water column needs more attention from anglers because if you bring up a fish from that depth and have to throw it back its going to take hours for the fish to get back to where it was and neutrally buoyant if it even survives upon release

Do mutton snappers taste similar to Red Snapper? I've had those in Mexico. Grilled the fillets and they were. just great. I guess they were over fished and aren't legal now? Anyway, neat little trip. Enjoyed that guys. Keep staying in that current and the pelagics will come around! Thanks again!

I just looked up Maxcel reels on google. My bad for not knowing about them. They do look very similar to the Avet line of reels. Do you ever use a descender to release a fish with an air bladder that is hanging out of it's mouth? We use them here on the California coast frequently.

Oh yeah, here I am giving YOU guys tips! HA HA HA HA HA! I can teach you all how not to catch a carp on a flyrod. Should be going up to fish the S. Platte this weekend. Big trout in there but a lot of little stockers get in the way.
